Devin Troy Strother got his BFA at Art Center College of Design, Pasadena and had his first solo show at Richard Heller Gallery in June 2010. His first solo exhibition in New York was at Monya Rowe Gallery in 2011. Strother lives and works in Los Angeles, Calif. and Brooklyn, N.Y..

Why do you use these particular materials?
Because I'm really bad at using all the other one's.

Name an artist you'd like to be compared to.
If Alfred Hitchcock and Matisse had a baby and she/he were an "ARTIST," I'd wanna be compared to that person.

What can't you live without?
Chapstick, clean socks, and handkerchiefs... I sneeze a lot.

What jobs have you done other than being an artist?
I was a dishwasher at Millie's restaurant, I used to work at Michael's craft store, I used to deliver pizza for Pizza Hut, courtesy clerk at Albertson's, library page at the Pasadena library, teaching assistant for a printmaking class, teaching assistant for a design 2 class, pizza delivery for Papa John's pizza. I worked in a prop room, I worked at a video store, I worked in a hot topic warehouse for a while. I worked at Chinese/funnel cake restaurant once, and I used to sell pot too!... Best jobs ever... pizza delivery and selling pot.

What forms first in your mind, a concept or a skill you want to explore?
Usually a joke forms first and then I laugh and then I try to recreate that with a painting... soooooo I guess concept?

Does where you live influence your work?
Yes!! of course, absolutely 100 percent totally, always, how did you know?

Is there any kind of media that affects the way you approach your work (i.e., film, TV, radio, social networking, print)?
All of the above please!!!!!!!!!

What's the most important career break, you ever got?
Thirty art blogs blogging my website in the fall of 2009

What are the fundamental beliefs that drive the way you work?
That I could die tomorrow so I better make something memorable

What comes first in your work, pleasure or pain?
Always pleasure, never pain... I don't like pain, pain hurts I don't want to hurt I wanna feel good.
