What's Your Reaction:

Can travel make us better people? Can it make the world a better place? Is it possible to make a positive contribution to a community just by having traveled there? We believe that smart travel can accomplish all of this--and more.

We'll bet you have your own smart ideas. Share them on Trazzler's Smart Travel Writing Contest (ending soon!) and you could win a $7,500 eco-travel dream trip to Tonga with Seacology, a brilliant organization devoted to saving island habitats and culture.

Helping Rebuild Community in the Southern Albanian Riviera
1 of 11
Once all mad dictators, pillbox bunkers, and pyramid schemes, Albania today is one of Europe’s least-explored treats—a tiny land of soaring Alps, a glistening riviera, and old stone villages. One of the latter, Vuno, clings to the lustrous hills above the coast about 190 kilometers south of Tirana. Unfortunately, with most of its 200-odd stone houses and the maze of cobblestone streets in terrible disrepair, the 40-family community was losing hope of becoming a gateway to the riviera. Enter the Outdoor Albania Association, a Tirana-based nonprofit working to reverse Vuno’s slide. A new hostel located in a renovated school (summer only) serves as a travel hub for visitors keen to lend a hand in the village and at the nearby beaches.

A note about Trazzler's slideshows: we don't do top-tens or best-of lists. Nor are we so morbid or presumptuous as to tell you where you must go before you shuffle off this mortal coil. The world is far too big and fascinating to encapsulate in any kind of definitive list. We simply chose the places that our writers have contributed that make us think, laugh, dream, and, in this case, make us see the good that travel can do. --Megan Cytron, Editor of Trazzler
