In the Los Angeles area, the West Hollywood library is getting a makeover: Street artists Shepard Fairey (well-known for his Obama campaign designs), RETNA, and Kenny Scharf teamed up with the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) to decorate the outside of the library's parking structure with gigantic murals.

The art is a continuation of the museum's "Art in the Streets" exhibit.

Fairey has painted a large "peace elephant" and a dove on one side of the building. He wrote on his website Obey that it's the largest mural he's ever done, spanning 70 x 106 feet. Fairey wrote:

Thanks to MOCA and the City of West Hollywood for facilitating. Calm down taxpayers... I was not paid to do the mural and paid for my own supplies and labor. Thanks for the wall space though.

RETNA painted a blue and white mural showing encrypted text of Salman Rushdie quotations, according to the L.A. Times. Scharf painted a collage of cartoon faces on a different part of the building.

The city will host the murals through July 2012.
