With Gas Prices It's 'Heads I Win, Tails You Lose'

Posted: 05/25/2012 11:04 am

You might think that the declining price of gasoline means that we don't have to pay attention to all that talk about oil speculation driving up the price of oil.

Right?

Wrong.

Even though the price of gas has fallen, you're still lining the pockets of Wall Street every time you gas up.

As Memorial Day approaches and summer driving season kicks off, remember that speculators will clean up even as the price of oil drops.

It's a rigged game, with rules that make you give your hard-earned money to financiers no matter what. It's like the bully on the playground who established the ground rules for a coin toss game as "heads I win, tails you lose." Under those rules, the bully always wins.

In this case, the bully is Wall Street. With oil markets, loose rules allow speculators -- not end users -- to dominate the volume of trading, increasing price volatility and making more money the more the price changes -- whether that price is going up or down.

Goldman Sachs has admitted that speculation adds as much as $23.39 per barrel to the price of crude. That translates to 56 cents per gallon. (See here if you want confirmation.)

Illegal manipulation

You would think that since speculators can legally game the system, they wouldn't need to resort to fraud or illegal manipulation. But last year, federal regulators charged five oil speculators with manipulating the price of oil in the early months of 2008 and making a $50 million profit from the scheme.

The group bought oil contracts, creating the perception of an oil shortage that in turn drove up oil prices. Then, having artificially inflated oil prices, they paradoxically bet that oil prices would fall, which of course is exactly what happened when they turned around and sold the original contracts, in effect ending the bogus shortage they created in the first place.

This one example of illegal activity took place at a time when oil prices were climbing toward a record high of $147 a barrel.

One way to solve this is for the Department of Justice to investigate fraud and manipulation in the oil markets. President Barack Obama has directed the agencies responsible for overseeing oil markets to root out anti-competitive and collusive behavior by the Big Banks that could be contributing to higher prices for families.

So far, it hasn't produced any public findings.

We need the working group to get on the stick and report back to the American people. Public Citizen is urging citizens to tell the Department of Justice to root out corruption in the oil market.

Legal manipulation

Back to legal manipulation. Efforts are being made to curb it, but they aren't enough. For instance, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission last year issued new rules pursuant to Dodd-Frank designed to curb excessive speculation in energy commodity markets, but they do not go far enough to protect consumers. And Wall Street is challenging even these inadequate rules.

Solutions include establishing a legal limit on the amount of oil contracts that any single trader can hold at once (legislation that would do this has been introduced), restricting communication between petroleum energy infrastructure affiliates and trading affiliates, improving trading market data disclosure by publishing trader-specific positions, requiring companies to detail energy trading activities in their financial reporting and imposing financial disincentives to speculate. See more details. Some of these solutions are contained in legislation introduced by U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) called the End Excessive Oil Speculation Now Act.

Long-term solutions

Long-term, we need to wean ourselves off gas. We can do this by aggressively investing in electrification of the transportation sector and mass transit.

Want to help? Tell our government to stand up to the bully on the playground and stop Wall Street from cleaning up at the expense of everyone who drives.

Until then, it's more pain at the pump while execs cash in.

We need CNG available at at least half of gas stations.

We need the EPA to facilitate, not obstruct the licensing of CNG conversion / bi-fuel / tri-fuel kits for cars and trucks.

We need Ford, GM, Chrysler, VW, Fiat, Honda, etc to offer the same Tri-Fuel option available in Brazil to North American buyers.

This isn't rocket science and it is NOT expensive either.

A long term solution would be to change our lifestyles - weaning ourselves off gasoline isn't enough.
GWB did us all a disservice when he said after 9/11 (paraphrasing): "Americans deserve the lifestyle that we have." That's what I call leading from behind.

Gas is still too high. $2 a gallon would be about right. There are alternatives, such as hydrogen cell kits that can improve gas mileage by 25% or more. The Johnson magnet motor looks promising. But until these become more widespread, gas is here to stay.

Assuming the price of gasoline was fair in 1965 when I got my driver's license, the price of gas today should be no more than $1.85 ... and that's for premium.

A permanent decline in the price of fuel is on the horizon. See Moving Beyond Oil and Cheap Green at www.aesopinstitute.org

The Ticking Time Bombs that open that website need to become a lever to accelerate their development.

Our survival may depend on that happening without delay.

Those Time Bombs can produce nuclear nightmares capable of eliminating human life in the Northern hemisphere.

Wake up folks. The life you save may be your own!

Yeah, I'm with you on that! My band built a bicycle powered sound system, so we can play using no coal, gas, or oil, for our shows. We're taking it out on the road to show people what kind of powerful energy solutions can be created on a grassroots level, and hopefully inspire people to start discovering their own! We've launched a kickstarter to help raise funds for this tour, and would love any help spreading the word about it, or if you're so inclined, donate! Thanks! I wanted to reach out to you about a campaign Melodeego is currently on. We're trying to go on tour this summer with our bicycle powered sound system, and help other people discover what kind of creative energy solutions they themselves can create.

I quit playing that game years ago!

Almost 3 years ago I bought a used CNG Honda and Phil Station for my house. Total package less than $25,000.00. It get's 35 miles per gallon equivalent and filling up a home cost me $0.92/gallon gasoline equivalent. That comes out to about $0.025/mile in fuel cost! My neighbors SUV is over $0.25/mile!

The price of oil and gasoline is determined by those who manipulate and control the crude oil futures markets, namely, the IntercontinentalExchange (ICE), ICE Futures Europe and the NYMEX and the price of oil is not decided by Obama, OPEC, Iran, Saudi Aramco,Inc., Libya and the laws of supply and demand.

That's all well and good, but at $4.25/gal locally, the cost of gasoline as a percentage of my monthly income is the same as it was in 1966. If I were Supreme Leader or Galactic Overlord, I would outlaw burning of hydrocarbons for transportation and force you to save it for pharmaceuticals, plastics and fertilizer. When you miserable lazy humans run low of oil, getting around town in your personal transportation modules will be the least of your concerns.
