House GOP: Can it Get Any Worse

"House Minority Leader John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) has tried to sell his troops on an Obama-like message of "change" as their only hope for success. "

So, the Rethugs think they can just say "change" and that will do the trick. Change what, I would ask? They can't answer that because, truth be known, they really don't think they need to change anything. They deliberately created the mess we're in and they like things just the way they are. The American people are onto them. Finally. posted 05/12/2008 at 01:20:17

Big Rewards Await Clinton If She Ends Campaign Now

How would Obama's supporters, all those Americans who sent him money, feel about him using their hard-earned dollars to pay Hillary's debts? (Just asking)

With regard to a unity ticket, wouldn't it be odd for Obama to recruit Hillary, the very person who's spent so many months villifying him. That's a tall fence to mend. (Just sayin') posted 05/08/2008 at 02:03:17

Bush: We've Been "Clear And Candid" On Economy

Clear and candid. Spin and spun. Until recently all we kept hearing from him, in his arrogant and sarcastic tone is, "The economy's strong!" There must be hundreds of sound bytes out there, of him saying this.

Last week Dubya finally admitted we're in a "slow down", but not a recession. Dubya prefers "slow down" because it's easier to pronounce two one-syllable words, than it is to pronounce "recession". posted 05/04/2008 at 01:36:57

Carter is a truth seeker. This interview clearly shows that he represents all of the qualities the neocons lack.

Carter, unlike Bush, is fearless, calm, and thoughtful; he's a confident adult who isn't afraid of our enemies, who doesn't rely on hyperbole and fear to make his point. He is a statesman of great integrity who, by comparison, makes the current White House look like the three ring circus that it is.

Carter is a truth seeker who values honesty over legacy. Bush is a deceitful liar whose legacy will have no value. posted 04/29/2008 at 09:52:33

Media Jump Ship From Obama To Clinton

Obama supporters want real change, so corporate America will make sure that he is not our next president. The corporate media will now shove Hillary down our throats and Obama will disappear from the discussion so that we slowly come to believe that she was inevitably the right candidate all along. Once again it will be proven that corporate America runs the show, that a democracy by, for, and of the people is a myth, while our elections are nothing more than a charade. posted 04/25/2008 at 23:29:11

The Loser In Pennsylvania: The Democratic Party

Yes, some Democrats are racist. However, you are guaranteed to see more of it - far more - in the Republican party. If you don't like racism, then vote Democratic. That's where you will see improvement on the issue because defeating racism has long been a major goal of the Democratic party.

Remember also that, although racism has always run deep in our society, we have seen much progress. It's been slow, but the illness is being healed. You can help make that happen by voting Democratic. We need an Obama presidency. It would help the racists see that America won't implode if we shed our bigotry.

When placing your vote, please also remember the impact your vote has on the Supreme Court. There are several judges on The Court who will soon retire. Republican presidents replace retiring judges with very conservatives ones, and The Court is already tipping toward conservative ideology. That, in itself, is a certain recipe for delayed equal rights progress. posted 04/23/2008 at 08:04:38

You have aptly described Bill and Hillary. They're corporate whores who have sacrificed their integrity at the expense of the country. Bill was sold out when he connected himself at the hip with Bush 41. The Clintons have been lured into the vast right wing conspiracy, as Hillary herself labeled it, and have aligned themselves with everything most Americans have come to hate. You're correct that the Pope is the leader of the largest religion on the planet... which is quite frightening. "Advancing faith" is neither "brilliant", nor "amazing"... it's ignorant, if not dangerous. And, yes, they may as well "just pick anyone off the street for that job"... because that job is a fraud.

Another thought, regarding being remembered after death: The objective should be about life, not legacy, and certainly not afterlife. What kind of person do we want to be, and what kind of life do we choose to live? Will our lives matter while we are alive, while we can be effective? Will we care about and improve the lives of others? The truth is that when the lights go out, it's over. Don't put off the opportunity of the present because of some afterlife scam.

Administration Set To Use New Spy Program In U.S.

This enhanced surveillance is our worst nightmare. Although it's coming into fruition under this administration don't think for a minute that, once imposed, future administrations won't utilize it. On the other hand, there may be more cards up their sleeves, like permanent power. They've set every advantage in place.

The elites, Bush's "have's and have more's", are winning over the battle for our democracy. The plans were set in place before 9/11, but what a gift those events were for them, allowing them to sell more fear to an already frightened nation. Those of us who aren't easily frightened, who dared to question, were accused of being unpatriotic. Most Americans didn't ask questions because American Idol doesn't cover politics. The country kept tilting to the right.

The thing I worry about most is Blackwater. They'll be ready and waiting to go after any American accused of being an enemy combatant. The right-wingers who were afraid of losing their guns supported the Bush Regime. But they're in for a big surprise. All the weapons in the country won't protect any of us when Blackwater rolls into town.

Patriotism in the Kingian Tradition

Thanks for your commentary, Mr. Smiley.

Many would call me unpatriotic for saying this, but to be honest, I have no problem with anything Jeremiah Wright has said, either in or out of context, because he has spoken the truth. We are a country of puffed up false pride and double standards, of false patriotism that demands nationalism at the expense of our integrity. Our delusional identity is the heresy, not the words of Jeremiah Wright. He simply sends the message.

Democracy calls for all Americans, both black and white (of which I am the latter) to look into the proverbial mirror and face our historical record. The beauty of self-reflection is that it rattles us and provokes us to aim for higher standards. Real pride comes from accepting our mistakes, knowing that we can do better, and then working toward improvement.

Conversely, those who chant the patriotic mantra are cowards. They fear change and they will keep us stuck in the past. They're easily recognized because they always hold the power and have the most to lose.

We need more Jeremiah Wrights. Many more. We need Americans who will stand for the truth, who aren't afraid to face the ugliness of our past as we look to our future. posted 04/11/2008 at 12:05:50

The Biofuel Boom

Bill says in his above essay: "What do we do? I don't know."

After laying out the fuel dilemma and possible solutions, which just end up creating more problems, it seems that the only way to close the circle is the same answer to all the world's problems: too many people. It just may be that there are NO good solutions, with the current population. Everything is out of balance and there is much suffering. The sooner we come to accept that reality the better off we'll be to limiting our reproductive behavior. It is NOT logical to continue expanding our numbers.

We need to quit duplicating ourselves. That's what we do, Bill.

As a white woman I'm sensitive to the fact that many African American women resent white women who date and/or marry "their" men. It's possible I'm being way overly-sensitive here, but I question why a magazine would do something that fuels these fires. Why can't people just be more sensitive to the feelings of others? Why can't we just all get along and move forward together? :- ( posted 03/25/2008 at 14:55:17
This is blatant. I wish LeBron James would have seen through this and refused to do it. I find it disgusting that many people believe an African American man's ultimate goal is to get a white woman. WTF.

And, by the way, since the magazine boasts to be a "Shape Issue", why is Gisele Bundchen in the picture? She's a scrawny, under-fed, fashion model who has no shape. You could hang clothes on a tree and they'd look just as good. LeBron James, on the other hand, is in great shape. The photo would have been far better with him alone. If contrast was the goal, that point would have been better made with an average-sized man in the photo with LeBron, not a woman.

I think the Republicans could easily target either one of them for the multitude of issues they've already thrown at each other, and I wonder again, why did we end up with these two? Would McCain stand a chance on a debate stage with Biden, Dodd, or Edwards?

On the other hand, I'm glad the Democrats are risking the nomination of a woman or an African American. We are so past due in taking either minority seriously as a potential president.

I hope Obama will be the nominee. I believe his calm, intelligent, and thoughtful speaking style will make McCain look like the imbecile that he is... only he can show the electorate that McCain is just George W. Bush in disguise.
