Why is it that whenever people such as Dobson start talking my skin begins to crawl? No Country for Bat-Men: The Superb, Disturbing Noir Knight

For those of us who discovered Batman in the comics as kids, we've always known TV and the movies have not done this character justice. It was always noirish, unsettling, and strangely compelling. Nolan understands. Like the most recent Bond outing, these directors understand that you can get it right and still be entertaining. posted 07/19/2008 at 20:15:57

McCain Campaign Initially Stood By Gramm Remarks

Dear Phool: Monthly reports, corporate profits, and all the other economic indicators have little to do with the day to day economics of average Americans. Yes, I suppose if one looks only at the data, one can argue persuasively the economy is strong and moving forward. Today it costs me twice as much to fill the same gas tank than before, my utilities are a third higher than they were a year ago, the cost of my health insurance has gone up, as has food, etc. What hasn't changed appreciably is my income.
Not whining, just fact. Not in my head, just fact. Should the day come when you are no longer earning a suitable income and your health fails, remember not to feel sorry for yourself or whine; it will all be in your pin sized head. posted 07/10/2008 at 18:31:05

To the poster who observed these people have "contributed absolutely nothing to this country's soul and spirit," I couldn't agree more. To be elected to public office is to become a steward of this nation, and yet it is breathtaking to see how this president and his administration have abused that trust. Whether the methodology of the science is questionable or not, isn't it reasonable to assume that toxins filtering into the environment are going to have a negative effect on the public health? The criticisms regarding the non-stop homage to Russert are fair. Civility also dictates taste with respect to how long someone's death should be splashed across the media. I am not particularly bothered by such comments. Trying to understand what The Beatles meant to their generation is the same as trying to explain Elvis or Sinatra. You like them or you don't.

What I do think is interesting is how no individual or group since has been as influential, which doesn't mean a lot of great music isn't being made. Since The Beatles, individuals and groups have had a much shorter shelf life. posted 07/02/2008 at 02:07:21

Bond's "Quantum Of Solace" Trailer Released (VIDEO)

I agree, OHMSS was a good film. One can only imagine how great it would have been with Connery. As a fan from the beginning, I have always been disappointed with many of the choices the producers made. Felix was never the same actor, Blofeld was continually changing, Charles Gray made two Bond appearances (horrible each time), Burt Kwouck appeared twice as different characters, stirred, not shaken was an obvious mistake in You Only Live Twice, and far too many sequences were speeded up. Having watched the early films again recently, I feel there was much that was sloppy and lazy, such as overuse of rear screen projection and the mismatches between location and studio shots. Thanks to John Barry, the music was always an essential ingredient, something which the producers of Never Say Never Again apparently didn't understand. Despite their shortcomings, the films have always had a wit and style that make them enjoyable. posted 07/02/2008 at 02:26:04
Craig returns Bond to the lethal Bond of Dr. No & From Russia with Love. Even when Connery began playing it lighter, there was always a lethal undercurrent absent from the pretenders who came after.
For me Connery will always be Bond, but Casino Royale has become my favorite Bond film. As for the criticism that Bond is imitating Bourne, the formula began in 1962 with Dr. No. posted 07/01/2008 at 00:33:52

Republicans Block Extra Taxes On Oil Companies

Oil companies are now untouchable. If taxed, they'll cut production and force prices higher. If demand increases, they'll raise prices. If demand decreases, they'll cut production and supplies and still force prices higher. If they drill ANWR, production will be years away, and the increased costs of drilling and delivery will push prices higher. This is something the regular news outlets should do themselves from time to time.
"That was then, this is now." If a comedy show is that good at mining video archives, surely the news outlets themselves could do this. In fact right after the McClellan book came out, instead of patting themselves on the back for their coverage of the lead up to the war, perhaps they could have gone back and shown what spineless organizations they really are. posted 06/05/2008 at 13:04:01

McCain's Day Marked By False Statements And Gaffes

When your only requirement for president is "he seems like a guy I could drink a beer with," you get what you deserve. McCain Pushed For War In Iraq For 10 Years

Even the casual observer knows this war is not winnable. All the flag waving and appeals to patriotism will not change the fundamental problem of this war. It is a war of ideology, not forces. Time table or not, there will be no waving of the white flags, no articles of surrender, none of what traditionally signifies defeat for one and victory for the other. Perhaps the Iraqis will cobble together something vaguely resembling a democracy and we can then agree they've done enough for most of our troops to come home. With the proper spin we'll be able to put a plus in the victory column. But many of us will continue to be uneasy about our reasons for going to war in the first place and what ultimately was achieved. Even with a democratic Iraqi government in place, it is unlikely America will be safer from terrorists. McCain's comments suggest he will bring the heart of a warrior to the White House, but not the acumen required in a post-Vietnam, post-Cold War world. posted 03/23/2008 at 18:47:43
