Electing Sweetie

Ah, the attitude of the "go along to get along" democrat. Either bush has committed impeachable offenses or not. If a congressperson believes he has, he should be impeached and tried. I don't recall "realistic" and pragmatic" in the Constitution. Of course, that is just me. I happen to believe that violations of the Constitution rise above all other considerations - political pragmatism, voter polling, political expediency, fear of consequences, etc. But, I guess I am an "old school" democrat - I love the Constitution and the integrity of my country more so than any single candidate. But, not to worry - I understand Obama is the lesser of two evils. posted 05/17/2008 at 13:50:04
Read my first sentence . This has nothing to do with HRC. I know she hasn't done anything about impeachment. I do not support her. I support Obama because he has to be better than mcinsane, not because I think he is particularly the best choice (neither is HRC). But, to tout his credentials as a Constitutional Scholar seems disingenuous considering his lack of action on impeachment. posted 05/17/2008 at 11:29:32
I wouldn't point to his Constitutional Law credentials. This man has never uttered the word "impeachment" in relationship to bush. So, the prof either believes that bush should not be impeached (scary!) or doesn't have the political courage to say so (scary!). posted 05/17/2008 at 09:33:37

Tell it to Brown of Brown vs. Board of Education. That court did the heavy lifting and proclaimed that "separate but equal" wasn't good enough. It isn't unrealistic to expect the courts to lead the way. They are the entity that has consistently been supporting the legality of same-sex marriage.

Your interpretation of this posting as "crying and whining" is astonishing. There is room enough in this discussion to allow for emotional appeals - sometimes that is the only way to connect to people who can't or won't process the logic beyond the argument. Health Care As the New Terrorist to Fear

My doctor recently tried me on several medications. We finally found one that worked. I called the doctor and she called the pharmacy. When I went to pick it up, I was told that the insurance company thought I should be taking something cheaper so wouldn't pay. The company thought I should take something else, despite what the doctor said! The doctor had to call the company and ask for a pre-approval which took four days - four days of treatment with a less than useful drug and increasingly worsening symptoms. I was lucky - it was only for four days. Imagine if the company simply refuses because the drug you need is too expensive. My problem was a relatively easy one to fix but it surely shows the insurance companies' bottom line - profit over pain; cash over compassion; money over morality.

Insurance companies ARE terrorists - we need a color coded system for them! posted 05/12/2008 at 22:47:46

So they are conservative. Does that mean they are happy to fight an unnecessary war run by a coward who went AWOL and a crazed chicken hawk who was too busy to fight for his country in Vietnam - that other unnecessary war? As for knowledge about WMD's, there are 900 (and some) documented lies trotted out by this administration in the run up to the war. bush's knowledge or not is a moot point. He and his co-criminals are proven liars. Their word has no value. posted 05/09/2008 at 23:00:52
Another compelling and moving post! I could not believe it when I heard that the number one election issue for Americans is now the economy and no longer the war , but, as you pointed out, if it doesn't directly impact the citizen in the street, he or she won't pay it much mind. So, patriotic citizens who have chosen to serve our country are dying in the middle of a senseless religious civil war - their trust that their lives would be placed in danger only when absolutely necessary has been violated by this administration. I am angry, frustrated and ashamed of my fellow citizens who ignore this outrage. There are two America's now - those whose lives are damaged or destroyed by this obscenity, and those whose lives seem disconnected from the surreal horror of it all.

Where is your anger, Senator Obama? You are the presumptive nominee - start demanding that this war end now - we don't have to wait for your inauguration. Force the American public to face what this country has wrought. posted 05/09/2008 at 22:56:26

18 Questions *From* Congressional Republicans

I wish I knew how to get through to them. I think we have a better chance right now - if we don't blow it. bush may have actually pulled the curtain back enough for lower middle class conservative whites to question if the republiscum really care about them. This may be our best chance for some time to come. I wonder if Obama can do it!

The evangelicals are a lost cause - they care about the end of the world and they believe it will happen in the middle east so the war mongering candidate will be their guy. posted 05/09/2008 at 19:46:10
White people who have little and feel marginalized like to believe that they are in the same group as the rich white folks in the republiscum party. The rich white folks know this and play them for fools. They actually convince them to vote AGAINST their own interests most of the time with promises of freedom and riches to come. The evangelicals are, I believe, actually suffering from a form of delusional thinking. They believe they will win the jackpot when they die - they'll enter heaven, walk streets of gold and have a palace, a crown, and a throne. All they have to do is follow the bible, which, the republiscum have cleverly tied to conservative "values." Fighting the political fight will get them into heaven, not to mention helping to bringing about the rapture, final battle with satan and the 1,000 year rule of Jesus. All too often, religion, which has a stated goal of improving life and engendering joy, is a poison - working only to reinforce existing power hierarchies that privilege one specific group (heterosexual men) at the expense of women, children, and GLBTQ men and women. I found two points particularly compelling: your comparison to the recent raids in Texas (your question about "freeing" women and children caught in the islamic faith was powerful) and your idea that many muslims have responded to criticism of their faith as encouraging violence by threatening violence. They are wrong!" I was shocked and frightened. She is truly angry at what she perceives to be unfair treatment of her candidate. If she is a representative of women her age who support HRC, we are in trouble.

I urged her to vote her children's interests rather than her own, and pointed out that mcinsane as prez was not in the best of interest of her children. She did seem to hear that. A Fool and His Country Are Soon Parted

Wrong - we can turn off our TV's and refuse to spend what little money we have on unnecessary items. We can march on Washington; we can reduce our driving to the absolute minimum; we can work TOGETHER to make them pay attention - once corporations begin losing money, they'll pay attention. We can call our rep every week to say "I'm watching you and I have a long memory." They want us to feel helpless and hopeless - it supports their aims. posted 05/01/2008 at 21:14:22
So? 81% think we are on the wrong track. What % are actually willing to DO something about it? 10%, maybe. Therein lies the problem. Imagine if those 81% marched peacefully on Washington and demanded the impeachment of bush, refusing to leave until impeachment was begun.

But no, we wring our hands - things are so bad for poor little me - then get in the SUV, drive to mickey d's that's a couple of blocks away, get some pseudo-food for .99, drive back home, settle in, and watch the boob tube, trying not to think about the pending foreclosure and never giving a thought to the latest young person injured or killed in Iraq. posted 05/01/2008 at 21:11:12

I would be happy for some courage, moral or otherwise, to just say no. No to electing anyone who supports the war; no to driving huge SUVs at breakneck speeds; no to the cable news companies who feed us a never ending diet of lies and propaganda; no to the corporate masters who are enslaving us.

Here is a very simple action that anyone can take that will send a strong message (especially if done by a large number of folks) and save you money - turn off your cable. Call the company and tell them the media is helping to kill our democracy and you will not support it anymore. Imagine hundreds of thousands of folks doing this.

But, even this simple act (that will save you money) is too much for people. Even this is too much - picking up the phone, dialing a number, losing hundreds of empty useless channels, and finding yourself 80.00 a month richer. posted 04/30/2008 at 22:09:47

Standing up to bush = standing up for the Constitution. posted 05/01/2008 at 13:45:06
Edwards' actions hardly rise to the same level as Gore and Pelosi. We knew Pelosi was useless when she took impeachment off the table. Gore, as much as I admire him, gave up the opportunity to claim his position as President - a position that was stolen by him by the greedy bastard in the white house - and perhaps make a real difference on global warming.

But Edwards' lack of an endorsement is NOT equivalent. He ran for the nomination and the party elite treated him an unforgivable manner. So, he nows sits and waits for the party to choose the nominee. Why is that a failure to lead? Let the people pick - perhaps he sees little difference between Obama and HRC and thinks that either one would be a good candidate. Edwards deserves no condemnation - he deserves to be the democratic nominee. But, we are stuck with Obama and HRC - neither one a true progressive and both too cowardly to stand up to bush. Mental disorders impact the individual, the family, the community, the state and the nation. And, unfortunately, we live in a country made up of people who, on some level, believe that people can just decide to "get over" their emotional and mental disturbances. We still equate it with moral weakness. We lack real compassion or patience when it comes to those with mental disorders. posted 04/19/2008 at 11:23:03

Mainstream Media Mainlining

What happened on ABC is par for the course. Really, who is surprised?! This is what we have "voted" for with our dollars - How many of you are willing to call ABC and/or your cable company and tell them you are turning off your TV, cutting off you cable - pulling your $$ out of the visual media industry until things change? What would happen if millions of amuricans turned off cable - that would get their attention - but we are addicted and, as with any addict, we will take whatever fix we can get - crack is as good as the pure stuff. So, those of us who are still able will moan and complain and rage and cry and call for change, but when all is said and done, we'll offer up the vein for the needle. posted 04/19/2008 at 08:12:42

The Gift Of 20/20 Hindsight

NoFactsJustTruth,

If folks would keep their eye on the Constitution, we would elect the right kind of people. That should be the number one measure of evaluation - how well has this individual done in honoring his or her oath to uphold the Constitution? I believe that everything else flows from this - uphold the Constitution and a "bushian presidency "can never be repeated. posted 04/19/2008 at 17:22:09
John,

You are so spot on!!! This is our dilemma - we know what republicans will do and we know what democrats won't do!

I fear an attack on Iran late in the game as a political move to help mcinsane (sorry, I cannot call him anything else - I really believe he has a diagnosable mental disorder). This would shift the conversation and distract the ADD american public from the Iraq disaster. Are democrats even considering this possibility?

I think I will go back to bed and pull the covers over my head. posted 04/19/2008 at 08:30:43

Obama Would "Immediately Review" Potential Of Crimes In Bush White House

What words did I put into his mouth? When has he called for bush's impeachment? He is a Constitutional scholar. If he takes no action against a rogue president , how are we to interpret that? Does he not have the courage to stand up for the Constitution? posted 04/16/2008 at 21:05:15
Rationalizations. The Constitution calls for impeachment when the president commits criminal acts. What does Clinton's impeachment have to do with it? Who cares if it is seen as 'tit for tat." bush either committed criminal acts or he didn't. If someone in the congress believes he did, that person should call for impeachment. Running for president is not a solution to bush's criminal behavior. Obama has no guarantee that he will win. Besides, Obama isn't running on a "vote for me and I will hold bush accountable" ticket.

And, finally, I agree that impeachment sends a message - we will not tolerate criminal behavior. Obama and most of his congressional cohorts choose NOT to send that message. posted 04/16/2008 at 21:02:31
It SHOULD happen but it WON'T happen. Obama must not believe that bush has committed any impeachable crime while pResident so he is unlikely to think so after. His inaction on bush while he was a senator speaks more loudly than does his words in this interview. posted 04/15/2008 at 21:44:01

Compassion for Whom?

Actually a search of the internet shows that the only other interview he gave to the Advocate was in 2007. It was a 15-minute phone interview. This is a more current and recent interview.

Also, why is it an either-or: speak to the mainstream media or the gay media? He doesn't have time to do both? Would you buy this argument if it were the mainstream media vs. the "black" media or the "latino" media or the "jewish" media? No!

Would he (or HRC) participate in a forum at a college that discriminated against racial/ethnic minorities (black, hispanic) or women? No!

Bottom line: GLBTQ don' t really matter to anyone - no one really represents the LGBTQ community when is all is said and done. Not HRC, not congressional democrats, and not Obama. posted 04/14/2008 at 22:56:38
