But, this has the potential to become a rallying point for California conservatives who've already got a million signatures to put an "initiative" on the Nov. ballot. HRC's Choice: Seward or Chase?

Great post, David. I see Hillary following Seward's example.

I've learned to respect Hillary the way a soldier comes to admire his enemy in defeat. Once the battle started to wind down, and she gave up the endless attacks, I started to see who she really is: a true champion.

A champion for women, to be sure. But, considering all that woman has been through in her life, she's much more of a heroic warrior. Especially her coming to Obama's and Democrat's defense when "the boy king" chose to lob his insult of biblical proportion from the Knesset, Wednesday.

I learned a lot from this primary fight, (I got banned from commenting here at Huffpo for a month for an especially ad-hominum attack on Bill one day) and I learned that "On Becoming Fearless" one should stick to the topic, and drink decaf.

I think Hillary has learned alot, also, and I honestly can't picture her walking away from this with anything but honor. She will be a major force in the party, and an example to everyone.

McCain and the Republicans are asking us to redefine patriotism as loyalty to our military, not to our laws and ethics.

You are absolutely correct in the this assesment. It's the same argument Noam Chomsky makes for reinstating the draft: that in making the act of war everyone's responsibility, everyone has an equal right to oppose it.

And there's no question that McCain is unpatriotic. His suggesting that he would use pre-emtive strikes proves that he intends to continue Bush's destruction of the constitution.

Clinton Camp: It's A Miracle We're Not Behind In Pennsylvania

It's a good time to look back at the interview Hillary did with Katie Couric, right before the Iowa caucus: (link to entire clip follows)

Katie Couric: "If it's not you, [who becomes the eventual nominee] how dissapointed will you be?"

Hillary: "Well... it will be me. But, of course, I'm ready to support the Democratic nominee whoever it is."

Katie Couric: "I know that you're confident its going to be you, but... there's is the possibility it won't be, and clearly you have considered that possibility..."

Hillary: "No, I haven't." [...]

It's interesting that Hillary mistook Kouric's initial question about her possible dissapointment to imply that she wouldn't support the eventual nominee. (Perhaps Freudian is a better way of describing it.)

And it's troubling to think that Hillary's committment to support the nominee, here, is made only with the assumption that she will be the winner. I wouldn't suspect her of being perhaps duplicitous in this case, except that she has a history, now, of overturning previous committments, like she did in Michigan and Florida, which she originally agreed would "count for nothing."

Or, if she and Bill hadn't already let us down with Gore, and Kerry.

John Cleese Offers To Write For Obama

I've always loved John Cleese. I have a movie idea I'd love to see him produce (I offer it here, free of charge) It's a spoof on the absurdity of American religion and it's a take off on the old classic "The Russians Are Coming! The Russians are Coming":

"The Pastors Are Coming! The Pastors Are Coming!"

Based on "The Russians Are Coming! The Russians are Coming" the story pits a small New England town against a U-Boat filled with black preachers, led by Rev. Jeremiah Write. The comedy centers around a love story, and a thrilling scene where the local boy is saved from falling off a church steeple by one of the black preachers.

Pat Buchanan plays the signature role of the old mailman who rides through town yelling "the Pastors are coming!" at odd moments, seemingly oblivious to the fact that everyone knows this. (remarkable acting on the part of Pat Buchanan who somehow rides his bike "no-hands" while chopping the air in hatchet like motions to emphasize his point)

In the last scene, the previously frightened town folk help the pastors escape out of gratitude for saving the young boy, the lovers part with resigned looks, and and Pat Buchanan, still ranting, "The Pastors Are Coming" at the top of his lungs, rides his bike off the end of a pier to the delight of all.

Bill Clinton's Ties To Colombia Trade Deal Stronger Than Even Penn's

"But the former president is a different type of adviser; one with even more influence than Penn, and one who cannot be pushed out of the campaign. In a hypothetical Clinton administration, ... his ties to the Colombia trade agreement have on several occasions put him at odds with his wife's stated positions."

That's putting it mildly.

Hillary's connection to 'The Fellowship' (the Douglas Coe led "National Prayer Breakfast of right wing thugs) led some to speculate that the key connection for Hillary in that group would be James Baker.

"The Clinton's provided a key facet for the Bush 41-Oliver North operation to train Contra pilots at Mena, Arkansas during the Contra death squad and cocaine operation of the 1980's (aka: Iran/Contra). The Arkansas Development Fund was established by Hillary's then law firm to help shield attention from where all the money was coming from that was pouring into that fund and into pockets of those associated with the Clintons. This operation was what "made" Bill Clinton (and therefore his wife) members of the Bush gang. This is a classic CIA political relationship."

Lobby For Colombia Trade Pact Casts A Wide Net

If you read the whole article at the NYTimes, you will ponder these paragraphs, and ask yourself, "Are Bill and Hillary, or perhaps the entire Democratic Leadership Council just Republicans in sheep's clothing?"

"While Mr. Wolfson has taken a leave from Glover Park, for example, he still has equity in the firm valued at $500,000 to $1 million, according to a disclosure form.

'A long list of former Clinton administration aides, including Mack McLarty, the former counsel to the president; Donna E. Shalala, the health and human services secretary; and Leon E. Panetta, the onetime chief of staff, also have come out in support of the deal. It puts them in alliance with Mr. Bush and Republican leaders."

Clinton Hospital Story May Actually Be True

At the end of the story, Jake Tapper says:

Should Democrats Eliminate Superdelegates and Caucuses in 2012?

You're right about super-delegates, they gotta go. Especially the ones that have never been elected to office.

I disagree, respectfully, with your statements about caucuses. The beauty of a caucus is it gets people involved, it's a chance to do something together. (If I was younger, I could think of a lot of reasons why the caucus was good for democracy--well, actually, I CAN think of reasons, but... never mind)

In a State like California, of course, it's unmanagable, but in smaller states it helps get the ground troops needed in November up and running. It's like basic training. The privacy part of voting is really weird when you think about it. It's not like anyone's asking you to take your clothes off, they're asking you to be willing to spend a couple of hours at most, talking to your fellow Democrats about the issues, the character of the canidates, and what the goals of the party are down-ticket.

Americans are so afraid of people. It's no wonder we can't get our shit together.

It's the electoral college that's screwing things up, along with electronic voting. Dump 'em both.

Patriotism in the Kingian Tradition

I was watching the show when you said this, Tavis, and I'm embarassed to admit that I actually pumped my fist into the air and yelled "yes!" (the embarassing part is... I live alone, not even pets) Anyway, I've always been a big fan of yours, but never as much as that night. Thanks for keeping the faith.

On Tim Russert's show today, Andrew Sullivan said something very beautiful. He was talking about why Obama didn't just "throw his pastor under the bus." He said:

"If you read 'Dreams From My Father' (Obama's autobiography) it is about the 'absent father', and this is the person he found as a father figure. Obviously, the bonds between them are psychologically very deep." Then he seemed to become more intense, and he said:

"And frankly... I want a Christianity that has to be disowned by politicians, rather than co-opted by them."

Thanks, again Tavis. (Oh, and anyone interested in getting to more about the patriotism of Rev. Write, please click the link, below):

McCain Called A 'Warmonger' At Obama Event

Technically, Shultz is correct in using "warmonger" to describe McCain.

The definition of "warmonger" is: a person who advocates, endorses, or tries to precipitate war.

Since there is no end to hostilities, and McCain has suggested no real plan to end them, his saying he'll stay in Iraq for "a hundred years, maybe more" means that he's "endorsing" THIS war. (the "hostile" one were are currently in.)

The reason McCain is trying to cover his statement is because it shows the real Bush plan for Iraq: it is meant to stir up hostilities in the region. There was never any plan to end hostilities. If there had been, we wouldn't have disbanded the Iraqi army. The plan from the beggining was to insert a puppet, control the drilling rights (to slow production, thereby increasing demand and OPEC profits) and create permanent bases in the region: the same thing we've done ALL OVER THE GLOBE for the last fifty-seven years.

Right on, Ed. Tell it like it is. The war hero is not a man of peace, he's a man of hostility. You called it right. posted 04/05/2008 at 16:07:23

It distracted people from her vote to allow cluster bombs that kill kids. It distracted people from her support of NAFTA. It's not a mistake, it's not "oops, we didn't have time to vet the story", she didn't vet the story because if she had, she couldn't claim "PLAUSIBLE DENIABILITY" with another lie.

Using a "false anecdote for political reasons" is legally SUGGESTIO FALSI:

"The punishment visited on Sen. Hillary Clinton for her flagrant, hysterical, repetitive, pathological lying about her visit to Bosnia should be much heavier than it has yet been and should be exacted for much more than just the lying itself. There are two kinds of deliberate and premeditated deceit, commonly known as suggestio falsi and suppressio veri. (Neither of them is covered by the additionally lying claim of having "misspoken.") The first involves what seems to be most obvious in the present case: the putting forward of a bogus or misleading account of events. But the second, and often the more serious, means that the liar in question has also attempted to bury or to obscure something that actually is true. Let us examine how Sen. Clinton has managed to commit both of these offenses to veracity and decency and how in doing so she has rivaled, if not indeed surpassed, the disbarred and perjured hack who is her husband and tutor."

Obama is the presumptive nominee, so SLIMING HIM with false stories about him being a muslim, un-patriotic, not qualified, and a "cult figure" are hurting his chances with educationally challenged voters. And lastly, the division in the party is not being caused by Obama or his supporters, it's being caused by people who are having difficulty discovering how FLAWED a candidate this person is. She is pretending to care about children with this made up story, when at the same time she has done more to KILL CHILDREN than almost any other Democrat.

Beside her AUMF vote, and her joining with Lieberman to create a pretext to bomb Iran, there's this vote on the use of cluster bombs:

"Over 150 nations have signed the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty. It pains me that our great nation has not. But in the autumn of 2006, there was a chance to take a step in the right direction: Senate Amendment No. 4882, an amendment to a Pentagon appropriations bill that would have banned the use of cluster bombs in civilian areas.

Senator Obama of Illinois voted IN FAVOR of the ban.

Senator Clinton of New York voted AGAINST the ban.

It's important to know the facts of McCain's voting record, since he's trying to paint himself as something he's clearly not, but on a day like this, when we could HONOR DR. The important part of this story is the source, Ben Smith, and in particular, Politico. If you remember, Politico got it's start at nearly the same time that the Democrats took over congress. Since then, Mike Allen, Ben Smith, and others have played a hand in several DISINFORMATION campaigns. This story is not unlike some of the stories used to overthrow governments by the CIA. We should always remember to....

CONSIDER THE SOURCE.

"WHO FUNDS AND RUNS POLITICO", by Glenn Greenwald:

"Like most billionaires with diverse business interests, Joe Allbritton had political relationships of all sorts. But the coterie around him -- and those who created the Politico, including the Politico's current CEO -- are plainly firmly entrenched in the right-wing political movement, with overlapping business and other ties to the Bushes, all kinds of international financial interactions with the Saudis and various right-wing governments, and long-standing ties of many kinds to the Reagan circle.

We hear incessantly about how this group or that group is funded by George Soros, as though that fact, by itself, proves the group's political affiliations. But those groups do not purport to be nonpartisan newspapers or sources of news. The Politico claims exactly that. Surely it is notable that those who created The Politico, who are funding it, and who are in charge of its operations, are long-time Republican operatives and those firmly implanted in right-wing circles."

The whole thing is a farce. David Ignatius reviews a new book by Marc Sageman, saying:

"The heart of Sageman's message is that we have been scaring ourselves into exaggerating the terrorism threat -- and then by our unwise actions in Iraq making the problem worse. That the party knew it didn't stand a chance in the general election, and that it was better to have McCain go down in defeat than to jeapordize any of the possible contenders for the 2012 election. Conservatives hate John McCain and would be glad to either end his career, here, or have him win and take all the heat for the fallout of our retreat from Iraq.

When you consider that Joe Scarborough is now practically running a daily attack ad for Hillary, while trying to defend McCain's gaffes, it's clear that the idea is to get a head start on smearing Obama as much as possible. Apparently, the lack of any real damage from "PastorGate" has got them worried.

Four years is not too long to wait. But, eight years is enough time for Democrats to put alot of the constitution back together. And as we all know, the real enemy of fascism is a healthy democracy.

If McCain wins, he won't run for re-election. Jeb Bush, and George Allen aren't about to let that happen.

In attempting to retell the story of what McCain said, his supporters forget that he was trying to compare Iraq to our occupation of Japan after WWII, and our peace keeping presence in Korea after the Korean war. Both these countries welcomed our occupation and have profited from it. Indeed, we are partners with them, not just economically, but culturally in many ways. But, our presence there was only possible because it was welcomed, and becuase hostilities were over.

In Iraq, there is "NO END IN SIGHT" (a good movie, you really should watch)

So, McCain's statements are even more delusional when you try to imagine Iraq as a place where a western democracy would somehow, sometime, EVER BE WELCOMED. It is the FURTHERANCE OF THIS DELUSION that makes McCain so wrong and worthy of scorn.

He is clearly not interested in American interests. Like Bush, and the rest of the neo-cons, he is thinking about military presence, and the control of world oil.

The facts are these, Ahcmadinejad (sp) walked into Bagdad, was greeted with open arms, and basically given the keys to the city. BUSH had to SNEEK IN under cover of night, greeted only slightly better than his first pitch for opening day at the Washington Senators game.

IRAQ NOW BELONGS TO IRAN, thanks to the U.S. Military's oppresive, and selfish presence, that John McCain is happy to let continue for even one hundred years, more

(BTW, he had a choice when he decided to cross his legs: either he adjusted, or, he dealt with the "wardrobe malfunction" when he stood up. Presidents don't get to look that good in a suit without having to exercise judgement. It's always a matter of restraint.)

Just ask LBJ.

Poll: Clinton Pennsylvania Lead Shrinks To 5 Points

I got this link from "midwestvoter". All they said was "Something truly amazing is happening! Share this video with everyone you know...."

So, I'm sharing it with you. (Props to midwestvoter.) Pass it on. posted 04/02/2008 at 03:00:05

Keith Olbermann Continues Feud Against Wal-Mart, Wal-Mart Responds

There's a part in the film "The Corporation" where they do a psychological profile of corporations as if they were an individual person. The profile determined they were basically "psychopaths" (unable to tell right from wrong). Considering that U.S. law has given corporations all the same rights of a individual, shouldn't we be arresting and trying them in court for all their various "personal" crimes? Or, is that too much to ask of people who have to be "democratically" elected?

Only fourteen days till Bill and Hillary's tax returns are released. Is there income from stocks she has in Wal-Mart? Wanna bet the labor busting she did on the board led to the plan to recover this woman's medical benefits? That's bullshit, BTW, about the company not profiting by taking the money back. That money they took back comes off the money they pay out. posted 04/01/2008 at 16:19:34

Pelosi Suggests Bush Skip Olympic Opener

I love Nancy Pelosi. She's absolutely right. Bush has played "suck-up" to tyrannts to borrow on his war, let him pay for it, now, with some righteous action. posted 03/31/2008 at 22:44:33

Iranian General Who Brokered Iraq Cease-Fire Named On US Terror Watch List

You mean, Iran, of course. Of course, that's something to worry about. But then, with Cheney and Bush there's always something to worry about. So, let's make sure congress has him locked out of prescedence on the AUMF from 2003. Either they restate it as a one time deal, or he's going to use it to claim authority for another pre-emtive blunder. With Bush, one always wonders "will blunders ever cease?" posted 03/31/2008 at 22:52:08

Scarborough Thinks Obama Bowls Like A Little Girl

I think Obama should challenge Joe to play half court basketball, one on one, in Indiana. Joe put his manhood on the line. IT WAS HIS CALL. Let's see if he's up to the challenge. I'd love to watch Joe on the boards. Love it. I'm sure his producers at MSNBC would love it too, but... not as much as we would. (heh, heh...)

Joe, of course, is using a subtle form of racism here, knowing that blacks were prohibited from even entering a bowling alley so, they have no exposure to the sport. Teasing Obama amounts to the same sort of lame, "you don't see them driving race cars" sort of bullshit you'd expect from your average culturally challenged Republican. (By the way, Louis Hamilton (an Englishman of Jamaican descent leads the F1 championship so far, this year.)

MSNBC likes to play the FOX tabloid info-tainment game. I'm reminded of Andrea Mitchell saying, "it appears 'White Men CAN Jump' for Obama" when he won big with white voters in the Potomac primary. (Pat Buchanan and Joe Scarborough probably aren't fans of Spike Lee.)

When the dust settles, (probably Obama's second term ) maybe Joe, MSNBC, and all the rest will know how to deal with race. Till then, it's strictly business as usual. (Thank God, baseball season has begun.)

The Dodger's killed the Giants in the opener at Chavez Ravine, 5-0. Tommy LaSorda, Vin Skully, and Sandy Koufax were there.

Chelsea Clinton Asked About Monica Lewinsky Again, Watch Video

Bill and Hillary's marriage may not be any of our business, but that didn't stop Republicans from making MONICA LEWINSKY, and Bill's subsequent COMMITING PERJURY enough of an issue to sucessfully IMPEACH a Democratic Party president, and gaurantee a Republican congressional takeover.

How HILLARY CLINTON plans to avoid THIS ISSUE and not severly jeapordize our chances in 2008 "IS" OUR BUSINESS.

It's interesting that MSNBC left out the question from the clip. They are becoming the new FOX in some ways. It's troubling. posted 03/31/2008 at 16:40:52

Cancer Expert: Cell Phones More Dangerous Than Smoking Or Asbestos

Hopefully, studies will show that second-hand radiation from cell phones is equally dangerous and we can quickly move to outlaw their use in public places. (I'm serious.) Forget about cigarettes, microwave radiation is like getting x-rays. We're barbequing our brains out. (It's no wonder the bees are all dying.)

This is all Dick Tracy's fault. If he hadn't had that two-way wrist radio in his watch we'd all be just fine. (Some detective he was, huh?) posted 04/01/2008 at 08:03:42
