Quentin Tarantino Unveils New Film Project, Wants Brad Pitt To Star

Hey, I hope that Quentin IS indulged by the powers that be.
Yes, I agree, that "Grindhouse" should have been released as two separate movies (sitting through the first part, "Planet Terror" so exhausted me that I couldn't sit still for "Death Proof") but we always have DVDs. And I learned to appreciate both of those two halfs of "Grindhouse" from happening upon their quadzillion rebroadcasts over HBO's dozen channels while surfing.
The studios don't have a clue what makes Quentin tick and if they get any creative control over editing or dictating of time length of his pictures they will just interfere with what makes him great.
Please don't ever "leash" Quentin as it will be a sign of the Apocalypse. posted 07/08/2008 at 15:29:15

GOP's Teresa Heinz Kerry Attacks Come Back To Bite With Cindy

When I go on a business trip, I put EVERYTHING on my credit card. After two weeks, the total will be somewhere around $4-5,000.
McCain's campaign is in continual flux regarding contributions. They are usually in the red and, from day to day, they may not have the cash to pay for things such as, for example, fuel for that big jet they use to go from place to place in (and virtually every candidate has a jet, so this isn't something unique to McCain). Fuel is expensive at $5.00 a gallon (it's actually more than that for jet fuel). One fill up of the tank is probably $10,000...and they're probably filling it up every second day.
You are all familiar with the fact that Hillary Clinton lent her own campaign $11 million?
Well, I must assume that Cindy is doing the same thing for her husband's campaign. And when "loans" to the campaign have to be made on the spur of the moment, she probably pays for things like fuel bills and hotel bills on her credit card.

As a conservative, I had been mentally and emotionally preparing for a possible Obama presidency. Everyone on the right kept insisting that he was not only on the left but the EXTREME left.
Yet ever since Obama secured the nomination, he has, on an almost daily basis shifted not just to the center but the center-right.
Shall I count the ways?
FISA.
Gun-ownership.
Death penalty.
Federal-funding of his campaign.
NAFTA.
Tripping over himself to pander to Israel while at AIPAC.
No Moslems in photos surrounding him.
"Responsible, GRADUAL, withdrawal from Iraq" (exact quote from Obama from the speech at Unity, NH, making his Iraq stance almost the same as John McCain's)
And the latest: faith-based programs! George W.'s favorite "to hell with separation of church and state" initiative.
Obama has morphed into John McCain/George W. Bush knowing that America is, at its heart, conservative and that no one can be elected president without representing that core constituency. Obama saw that the Clinton presidency was the one of the most -- if not THE most conservative of the 20th century (NAFTA, balanced budget, welfare reform, Defense of Marriage Act, executing retarded people, etc.) -- and is, wisely, following in his footsteps.
So I am much more relaxed now...I've even been fantasizing that Obama's next repositioning will be to endorse the flat tax and once he does that (and who's to say he won't) I will actually CAMPAIGN for him! posted 07/02/2008 at 12:03:46

Help Me Write a Book

Gates may be an incredibly successful capitalist but that doesn't mean he properly understands the mechanics of capitalism. "Creative capitalism" simply is not necessary.
In the process of selfishly building up his $60 billion fortune, he did more for the poorest of the poor in the remotest corner of darkest Africa than he ever did by donating to and running the Gates Foundation.
It's like a Zen Koan. When you understand the nature of the above seemingly contradictory and outrageous comment, you'll understand the ability that capitalism has in trickling down to the most needy the greatest bounties. But in order for the system to work most effectively -- and for the poor and needy to benefit maximally -- the capitalist shouldn't waste his money by giving any of it to charity; he must stay the course in being as selfish and as money-grubbing as he possibly can. posted 06/27/2008 at 12:28:47

Richard Nixon famously said: "when you run for the nomination of the Republican Party, you run on the far right; when you run for president, you run just right of center; when you govern as president, you govern from the center.

But now that he's got the nomination, he's throwing you under the bus, just as he did Rev. Wright.
Some of the comments here -- and it's the case for the author of the piece, Ms. Pollard as well -- suggest that Obama has had to reposition himself in order to win the presidency...but once he ascends to it, gosh, he'll return to the "real" Obama and satisfy his base.

CONCRETE examples of the world's poor who are dying because of Gore's policies: Gore's insistence upon catastrophic man-made global warming was the main impetus behind corn-to-ethanol policy of the federal government has been at least partially responsible for prices of corn to triple in the last few years (because so much corn is being diverted to ethanol production) making it very hard for poor people to buy basic food staples. They are dying of hunger as a result.

One man's spirituality is another man's evil.
Take Al Gore as a case in point. Many "Green's" would look upon Gore's work with his pro-environment corporation as the perfect example of spiritual capitalism. Yet to the world's poor -- many of whom are literally dying because of Gore's policies -- his spiritualism is pure evil.
The problem is that the spiritual side of the equation is always going to be subjective...and you can't quantify it and record it on a balance sheet. With profit, you can. I therefore think it is more honest that, at least publicly, corporations stick to maximizing profits and leave the assessment of spirituality to others. posted 06/22/2008 at 16:33:26

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but in order to generate hydrogen power, electricity is needed...and that electricity comes from the same electricity grid that supplies power for plug-in hybrids, no?
Plus, it is my understanding that even though the electricity used may come from coal-burning plants it is far, far more efficient and less damaging to the environment to get the energy this way than to burn gasoline through a conventional gas-burning engine... posted 06/16/2008 at 13:37:01
The oil companies are, first and foremost, energy companies. If people consumed cars that drove on cow poop, that's what they'd sell.
Oil companies make about 9% profit on every gallon of gas they sell you which is, by the way, far less than the government makes on each gallon in taxes.
And, by the way, oil companies aren't the ones consuming the oil and burning carbon...YOU AND I ARE. Silly to put the blame on them when all they are doing is making it available to consumers (and quite efficiently, I may add...when was the last time you had to wait to fill up your tank...30 seconds?) and consumers are the ones demanding it. posted 06/16/2008 at 12:45:11
The hydrogen-celled car is the favorite of President George Bush and, in addition to the horrible policy of corn ethanol, this is his favorite project.
But for hydrogen cars to become a practical reality, an entire distribution infrastructure has to be built at a cost of many billions of dollars across America.
There is already an alternative energy technology that exists today which has a distribution infrastructure already set up all across America. It's called the plug-in hybrid (which is a totally different fish than hybrids). Plug-in hybrids allow the car owner to plug in and recharge at home at night a battery in the car that is good for the first, say, 80 miles of driving. This is good for 90% of all car driving in America. And then for those days when one drives MORE than the 80 mile capacity, one simply converts -- while driving -- to the hybrid mode.
This is the future, NOT hydrogen cars. posted 06/16/2008 at 12:41:53
The problem with the EV1 was its range. Although 95% of our daily driving is less than 120 miles per day, there is the occasional time when we want to do a road trip. Because recharging the batteries took about 6 hours, it simply wasn't practical for most American because we all want the freedom of range.
That's why, at the end of "Who killed the Electric Car?", the film-makers themselves conclude that the solution is the plug-in hybrid electric car which provides a battery that is good for a range of, say, 80 miles per overnight plug-in and then the car can convert to gas-electric, freeing the driver to go for as long as he wants. Indeed, the plug-in hybrid is touted to an even greater extent on the Extras portion of the DVD of the film. Also, it is my understanding that the filmmaker is currently making a sequel that is devoted exclusively to the possibilities of the plug-in hybrid. So even the filmmaker is no longer an EV1 advocate but, rather, has transferred his alliances to the plug-in hybrid! posted 06/16/2008 at 12:34:16

Because of "alienation of affection" laws; that is, Jolie seduced a married man, Brad Pitt, and caused the dissolution of Aniston's marriage.
See: http://www.carolinafamilylaw.com/alienation_of_affection.html
Whenever I read how wonderful Ms. Jolie is and what a great humanitarian she is, I often think of how she stole another person's husband.
Too bad Alienation of Affection laws don't exist in California...then we really could have a chance at the batlle royal that the Huffingtonpost headline suggested! posted 06/13/2008 at 11:14:37

Dalai Lama Distances Himself From "Good Friend" Sharon Stone

Well said, Arithrianos.
There is something similar in Vedic literature as well. I can't cite exactly where I read or heard it but it is something to the effect: the ways of karma are unfathomable.
What Ms. Stone said is no more, no less offensive than Jerry Falwell or Pat Robertson saying that 9/11 was caused by American decadence and homosexuality. posted 06/12/2008 at 11:11:01

Cancer: Paul Newman's Friend Confirms Ill, Newman Turns Over $120 Million To Charity

Then to use YOUR logic, fymioyo, Warren Buffet must be a really big megalomaniac for holding that press conference last year when he announced he was giving $40 billion to the Gates Foundation.
That selfish Warren Buffet getting all that attention for himself...what was the cad thinking... posted 06/11/2008 at 16:41:48
You really should read the whole thread, fymioyo. My criticism was never with Mr. Newman but with the author of the piece for making the silly comment that Mr. Newman's contribution was "unprecedented" when it obviously wasn't.
Then I responded to YOUR very silly comment about putting one's image on one's products when it is, again, quite obvious that Mr. Newman himself has been doing that for years.
Kudos to Newman for not only putting his image on his products but for giving so much over the years. A great big razberry to you for not seeing the context of this thread. posted 06/11/2008 at 16:40:05
Actually, wealthy people give exponentially more from their PRINCIPAL, rather than from their income, although while they are alive they get a tax deduction, within limits, against taxable income.
Theda, you write: "that's what wealthy people should do". Well, even if wealthy people did NOT give a cent to charity, they would still be giving many 100s of times more to the poor than you or me. Why? Because the enormous taxes that they pay fund most of the many poverty programs that make up a large part of the federal and states' budgets.
Wealthy people also give alot at death. Why? Because the death tax -- at about 50% -- takes so much of their fortune; any amounts of an estate given to charities at death are fully deductible against the death tax (and there's no limit as to how much one can give at death). posted 06/11/2008 at 00:44:39

Free Brigitte Bardot!

Sometimes it pays to be cute; sometimes not.
For example, if you're a baby harp seal, you'll get alot of attention in the press and have a better chance at survival because of it than, say, a slug or a rat.
But in Bardot's case, her cuteness (or at least her former cuteness) has given her attention that earned her notoriety that she otherwise wouldn't have obtained. posted 06/08/2008 at 18:47:45

Keith Olbermann Continues Feud Against Wal-Mart, Wal-Mart Responds

Wal-Mart is damned if they do and damned if they don't.

Flashback: Wright's Letter To NYT About Obama

Then perhaps you can tell me, sd4peace, why Wright invoked the interviewer's ethnic background/faith in a letter to her complaining about her treatment of him?

Why does Wright find it necessary to point out Jodi Kantor's religion?

What has that got to do with anything?

Here's what Wright wrote:

"When I told you, using one of your own Jewish stories from the Hebrew Bible as to how God asked Moses..."

...and...

"Maybe it was my faith in the Jewish Holy Day of Roshashana."

...and here's the choice words he uses to describe Ms. Kantor and the way she represented him in her article:

"duplicitous"; "biggest misrepresentations of the truth"; "smearing"; "your confused head"; "setting me up"; "spin"; "You looked me straight in my face and told me a lie!".

I find all these words and phrases interesting juxtapositions with the passages in which he felt it necessary to point out Jodi's religion.

I do indeed hope and pray that Jodi and some other enterprising journalists are now hot on the trail of Reverend Wright and going back through the archives of the past 20 years of his Church sermons, the Church's newsletters, and local media reports of his behavior.

I will NOT be surprised if journalists discover that the Reverend has certain, shall we say, prejudices for certain peoples of certain faiths.

And the sooner this is uncovered, the better. posted 03/28/2008 at 01:27:39

Pregnant Man?: Find Out How It Happened

avicenna writes: " I have no doubt that Thomas and Nancy would be very devoted and loving parents...".

Let's put aside for the moment the fact that other than reading Thomas self-written article in "The Advocate" avicenna has never met either of the future parents and therefore could not possibly know what kind of parents they will become. Note that avicenna writes the above after having just written an entire paragraph describing Thomas as having practically conjured up a veritable Frankenstein by ingesting over a long period of time male hormones, thus creating the most inhospitable environment in which to create human life.

Whatever lends itself to avicenna's conclusion that Thomas and Nancy would be good parents? If anything, from what avicenna has written, they should be arrested for illegal and irresponsible experimentation with human life! posted 03/27/2008 at 09:03:19

Those Hidden Costs

Silly me, I thought I would comment on a grammatical usage of a word as an interesting aside to a topic that I didn't have anything to add to because I didn't much agree or disagree with what Kareem wrote.

In other words, my comment was 100% NON-political.

Somehow USMAMule and the other posters insisted upon reading into my comment on the usage of a word (that the dictionary agrees was used correctly) a political bias that I neither intended nor wrote. posted 03/27/2008 at 01:14:35
Kareem writes: "The issue of our country's history with regard to race is one that Senator Obama literally embodies in his physical being as well as various political stances he has taken."

I find it fascinating whenever the word "literally" is used in the fashion that Kareem has used it, which is the exact opposite of its original intention. No, Barack's actual physical body does not embody a country's history (no physical body is capable of embodying text...this is an impossibility). Barack's physical body FIGURATIVELY embodies the country's history; Kareem meant this as a metaphor, as a figure of speech.

This "misuse" of the word "literally" has become so widespread that it is now "accepted". This is what dictionary.com has to say under "literally":

"Usage note Since the early 20th century, literally has been widely used as an intensifier meaning "in effect, virtually," a sense that contradicts the earlier meaning "actually, without exaggeration": The senator was literally buried alive in the Iowa primaries. The parties were literally trading horses in an effort to reach a compromise. The use is often criticized; nevertheless, it appears in all but the most carefully edited writing. Although this use of literally irritates some, it probably neither distorts nor enhances the intended meaning of the sentences in which it occurs. The same might often be said of the use of literally in its earlier sense "actually": The garrison was literally wiped out: no one survived." posted 03/26/2008 at 12:28:34
