Introduction by Alyssa Bereznak, photographs and captions by Marcus Samuelsson, Vanity Fair

Born in Ethiopia and raised in Sweden by his adoptive parents, Marcus Samuelsson understands more than most how culture, heritage, and community affect cuisine. It was after his grandmother Helga taught him to cook that he decided to attend a culinary institute in Sweden, which helped him nab an apprenticeship and then an executive-chef job at Nordic New York restaurant Aquavit. There, at age 23, he earned a coveted three-star rating from The New York Times. But it was Samuelsson's opening of Red Rooster -- a Harlem restaurant that serves up inventive Swedish/African-inspired comfort food -- that catapulted him to the upper crust of the New York food scene. Since then he's won a myriad of awards, cooked dinners at the White House, launched his very own tea line, and sautéed stir-fry alongside Michelle Obama on Good Morning America. Look at an exclusive peek into Samuelsson's day-to-day culinary adventures, including his Inauguration Day snacks and a meal he recently prepared for Alicia Keys.
