So, just when I'd hoped Sarah Palin would disappear from public consciousness, it seems we can't get rid of the former Republican Vice Presidential candidate. She's everywhere and so too is the ongoing controversy over her ultra-expensive Hollywood style "make-over". This weekend New York Times revealed details of the $165,000 the Republican party had spent on three stylists for Palin, in addition to $150,000 already reportedly spent on clothes. It's now claimed, even more was spent than that. Palin, 44, through a spokesperson, has claimed she was "appalled" at the expense. The clothes are being given to charity.
I read all this and thought - GOP: here's a few things you need to know about makeovers and stylists.
1) Alas, but true, we women do need a hair stylist and a make-up artist for TV. If you can find one person who does both then great but even TV networks usually have different artists for on-air talent, since different skill-sets are required. We shouldn't knock the expense spent on that. I have no doubt Hillary Clinton didn't set foot on the campaign trail without a hair stylist and make-up artist in tow. Speaking from personal experience, I can tell you that if you do end up on TV, with your hair unstyled, it looks like a birds nest, wisps everywhere. And if you have no make up, then under the lights, you look not like yourself, but a shining sheet-white female Edward Scissorhands. It's very distracting from what you are trying to say.
2) The clothes: you do NOT need a stylist nor to spend insane amounts of money especially if you have a decent figure, which Sarah Palin does. All you need to know is that there is one overriding principle for the camera: the simpler you keep the clothes, the better. A floral print, stripes or check may look wonderful in real life. Absolutely not in photographs or on television. Just look at the Oscars. The women who look the best are always the ones who stick to one color and who keep the shape as simple as possible. It's when they get adventurous, the results are disastrous. Remember, Bjork as the swan, anyone? Or Lara Flynn Boyle's tutu experiment?
So, for Palin, of course, the irony is that dressing conservatively should have been easy. A few pencil skirts (she has great legs) fitted jackets, or a knit dress or two, simple accessories and she'd have been fine - far better, in fact that Cindy McCain, whose ridiculously over-the-top designer wardrobe reminded me of the clothes that used to be worn by the character of the rich, isolated Krystle Carrington, played by Linda Evans in the TV series, Dynasty. They did not say "woman of the people." No wonder the Republicans got trounced.

I for one will change registration to Republican so I can vote for Sarah in 2012.
She should still look good, and no way can she win!!
Operation Chaos in full operation.
Sorry, that was meant to be a reply to lmvd3 and wisconsinnercrat
yeah, that's how I felt when I saw that Alabama is actually planning an Obama holiday
Who cares about Sarah's personal idealogy? She gives American males something to dream about at night.
Maybe she will disappear if the media stops recording her every move...
the republicans plucked palin out of no where. she's not qualified to be president. she's only a governor in a city i never heard of in a state i don't care for. the republicans pulled her out of the woods and dressed her up like a barbie doll for devious political reasons. the republicans might as well pull out joe the plumber and dress him up. she is a puppet of the republican party, plain and simple. they built her up to celebrity status to help further a trumbling party. but im not going to play w/the Republican party's puppet.
If Palin had everything (a Pretty made-up package) it takes to run for Political Office just wait ten years.
That beauty contestant from South Carolina a few years ( from You Tube fame) might be of age to run for Governor for her state by then. She already talks like You with her sentence construction.
And she will be 'younger & prettier' than you..... You Betcha.
All I can say is - it's a good thing they didn't have television in Abe Lincoln's day.
People who find this woman to be beautiful are sheltered, indeed. Why settle for some 44-year-old mother of five, no matter how "nicely preserved" she may be? For those who want to look at beautiful women, there are plenty out there who outshine Palin in every possible way. Pick up a Playboy, for cryin' out loud. Which begs the question: Why does her appearance factor into this at all? If the consensus is that thanks to Sarah Palin, we all see now how important physical attractiveness is in a candidate for national office, let's just skip national elections as we've known them and instead put the winner of the Miss USA pageant right into the White House.
Only the Dems focus on here looks... we who care focus on her Character.
That's a mighty crooked character.
Her character? She's a shyster - no wonder you lost the election. Her character didn't get her as far as her looks.
Her CHARACTER ???? right!
How about focusing on her knowledge? short focus ... she was sadly ill prepared, we all saw that!
Anyone who thought Palin was prepared to be a heartbeat away from the Presidency, wasn't focused on anything OTHER than their own partisan blind spot!
The Miss USA beauty pageant winners of 2000 and 2004 would have made better Presidents than the one we selected.
Every time I log into the HuffPo site, Sarah Palin appears in the number two slot of featured attractions. Three of the four stories listed below contain her picture. The fourth is Barack Obama, who also has star power.
Sarah has the rare quality WYSIWYG.
We need a real plumber so that she and Joe The stop resurfacing every time we try to flush.
GO AWAY!
C'mon Vicky...you didn't really hope she would disappear, now did you?
Yeah no kidding. Every news source starts out every Palin segment with "just when you thought she was gone" or "just when we hoped it was over" and It is total bull. If you dont want her to be talked about on the news THEN STOP TALKING ABOUT HER ON THE NEWS!! I know that the average American HAS forgotten about her.... until she gets brought up again. She is about as deep as a puddle and talking about her wardrobe, and her make up, and her hair, and her ditzy personality this long after the election makes whoever is reporting about as shallow has Palin herself.
Everyone wants to forget about her, nobody wants to be the one to stop talking about her.
Dear God!!!! Please make it stop! Please...
Sarah Palin is absolutely stunning and always has been! I just got the Sarah Palin calendar from Amazon, and it has some old pictures from when she was Mayor of Wasilla, and she has always been beautiful!!! I just find her so inspirational, and this calendar inspires me everyday to do good on her behalf!!
I agree! She'd make a fabulous salesgal on QVC!!! Why waste her time with this political nonsense? She could make the big bucks, which is what she really wants right there on the old T.V. AND be famouse. Go Sarah!
I just threw up in my mouth a little after reading that YOU GO GIRL bull. Sarah should do something for herself and her country. GO AWAY
A Sarah Palin calendar? You have GOT to be kidding. Bleccccchhhhhh. I think I am going to be ill now.
Ok, I'll bite...please give us a real list of what you have accomplished with the beautiful Ms Palin as your calendar inspiration. I would hope that good deeds would normally be part of your everyday life, but if you need "beauty" to inspire you, I can't argue with that...but I'd sure like to see what you have actually done.
Sarah Palin truly is gorgeous and does have fabulous legs.
What about her ability to think, reason, ruminate, speak coherently, read, comprehend? Oh, wait, how silly of me..."She is gorgeous and has fabulous legs." That's all 46% of the country enjoys.
Hey, two guys I work with said to me on different days during the election, " I'm voting for Palin because she is hot." Fortunately neither one was the boss, so I felt free to explain to each of them how he was a pure idiot for voting with his testicles.
Shame about her innards.
Unfortunately the innards of her head are not up to par. All get something, few get everything.
With people like Palin and Bush having successful political careers on nothing but hype, lies, and illusion, I'm convinced any idiot can be a politician. Not that all of them are.
Then people have the nerve to complain about Caroline Kennedy never having run for office. She would put at least half the people in Congress to shame.
