Lessons from the Rev. Eddie Long Scandal: Some Historical Context

Posted: 10/02/10 09:29 AM ET

Public denunciations of homosexuality often mask private same-sex desire. Just ask Ted Haggart, Mark Foley, Larry Craig, Richard Curtis, and Ken Melman. So, I was not surprised when I learned that Bishop Eddie Long, the Georgia mega-church pastor now facing charges that he abused his "spiritual authority" to win sexual favors, is a staunch opponent of gay marriage and a vocal critic of gay rights. In December 2004 Long led a "Re-Ignite the Legacy" march through the streets of Atlanta to, in his words, "present a vision of righteousness and justice." Opposition to same-sex marriage was at the top of the march's agenda, earning Long the title of "Anti-Gay Bishop."

The charges by four young men have only recently been filed, and it is not yet clear if Long broke any laws. But as we wait for this story to continue to unfold and for the facts to become clear, there is much to learn from it already. If nothing else, the Bishop Long same-sex scandal has provided us with a crucial teaching and learning moment, and we must seize it.

To my mind, one of the most important lessons is this: If your pastor drives a Bentley and wears a watch with a value equivalent to your annual salary, it is time for you to find another church. But the lessons go even deeper, cutting to the heart of black church history and culture, particularly as it relates to issues of sex and sexuality.

The first thing to know is that scandals such as this one are not new. They have been around so long that the "wayward black minister" has become a trope of black film, song, and literature. I'm thinking first of Zeke, the hypersexualized mass of a man in King Vidor's 1929 film Hallelujah. After having been partly responsible for the death of his younger brother, a remorseful Zeke "gets saved" and experiences a call to preach. He becomes a powerful preacher, and all is well until Chick appears. She is a temptress, and Zeke cannot resist her. Therefore, in the parlance of many black churches today, he "fell." Paul Robeson played the role of Reverend Isaiah T. Jenkins in Oscar Micheau's 1925 film Body and Soul. Like Eddie Long, Rev. Jenkins could also claim that he was "not a perfect man." Indeed, Rev. Jenkins was a ruthless con whose sole purpose was to swindle his hardworking congregation out of their money.

But we need not reach back to the 1920s for examples or rely on fictional accounts. Sex scandals have been a mainstay of black preachers in contemporary times as well. Jamal Harrison Bryant, the youthful and exuberant pastor of Empowerment Temple of Baltimore was caught in a web of marital infidelities that cost him his marriage two years ago. (It did not, however, cost him his church.) The Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr. has perhaps recovered from the hit his character took in 2001 when it was revealed that he had fathered a child by one of his senior staff persons, Karin Stanford. But I do say "perhaps."

Accusations of same-sex indiscretion are also not new to black churches. In 1939 the Chicago Defender revealed that the Illinois State's attorney had begun investigating one of the city's most prominent African-American preachers for reasons of a "scandalous" nature. The Rev. Clarence Cobbs had become a legend on the South Side, known as much for his flamboyant dress, fancy cars, and celebrity entourage as for his ministry. Although the nature of the scandal was never disclosed, Cobbs' response to the rumors gave an insightful clue. For many weeks after the Chicago Defender article appeared Cobbs insisted on his radio broadcast and from his pulpit that he was a "full man."

In 1956, Detroit's Rev. James F. (Prophet) Jones -- a friendly rival of Cobbs' -- was arrested on charges of "gross indecency" for having fondled the undercover vice agent assigned to investigate him. The night of the arrest, police found Jones locked in his bedroom with "two youths," presumably young men. Like Cobbs, Jones was given to expensive clothing and lived a lavish lifestyle. Although he was acquitted when an all-white jury determined that he had been entrapped, Jones's reputation faltered.

This aspect of the history is complicated for a number of reasons. It was not their same-sex desire that got Cobbs and Jones in trouble and nearly toppled their ministries. It was their abuse of power and indiscretion. Everyone knew they preferred men, and very few among their congregations or fellow ministers expressed any problem with it. They lived openly, though under a code of silence about their sexualities. (An unfortunate system of "don't ask, don't tell.") It may seem unimaginable today, but Cobbs, Jones, and many others served during a time in black America, prior to the civil rights era, when ministers were judged by the quality of their work not by their sexual preferences.

We need to recover something from that time but go even further. If we do not, incidents such as the Eddie Long scandal will continue to emerge, inflicting more harm on countless persons, as well as further rupturing the prophetic mission of the church. We can begin by having more honest and mature talk about the realities of sex and sexuality in our churches. And the reality is that homosexual persons have always played a crucial role in black churches. The homophobia must stop.

One of my Princeton colleagues recently pronounced the "death of the black church." If by that he means a church that fails to create a welcome place at the table for all God's children, I say good riddance. A new vision for African-American churches (dare I say all American churches) is one that is inclusive, universal, and forward-thinking. In a church like that, no one would have to hide behind a mask, and they would be less likely to hurt themselves or anyone else.

I recently heard Bishop Prophet H. Walker on an internet radio show called Center Stage,
he's the S. Carolina preacher who held the ATL rally calling for Bishop Eddie Long to resign.
He was quite passionate about removing as he called it the "sodomite" agenda from the pulpit.
The topic was "Blind Sheep following a Lost Shepherd," they were discussing church scandals.
Take a listen, Bishop Prophet Walker stole the show.

I'm curious as to why Professor Best felt it necessary to point out that Pastor Jones had an "all white" jury. Jones was acquitted.

Is he suggesting that in spite of an all white jury, justice was served?

"If by that he means a church that fails to create a welcome place at the table for all God's children, I say good riddance. A new vision for African-American churches (dare I say all American churches)"

The Body of Christ, the church is a welcome place for all races and all sinners, those saved and those searching. Are we all God's children?
Does everyone put their faith in God as their Father? Do all church members lead lives with repentance in their heart, dying to themselves, carrying the cross like God the Father's son, Jesus Christ did? This is what it takes to be a child of God and if you want to say good riddance then you never were one.

Wallace,
If your forward thinking takes you above what the inerrant word of God teaches then it could be you have fallen into pride against Christ instead of submission. Remove the inerrancy of the word of God and eventually forward thinking could effectively argue that Christ was never resurrected.

This article confuses me on several levels because it doesn't seem to be focused on one point. I would agree that the church, in its entirety, black, white, brown and what have you does not do a good job with the discussion of sexual issues. The church should be the first place where people can openly discuss these issues because the church is first and foremost a place of refuge. For people who believe that homosexuality is a sin you do yourselves and the cause of Christ a disservice by relegating the behavior to the shadows. I'm sure in churches all across the country there are people commiting fornication and adultery who are happily welcomed into the church. What makes their sins less offensive to God than homosexuality and I think that's the main problem. We are not God and it isn't our place to sit in judgement of one another. Christianity is a faith of love and human relationships. Christ never demonized sinners. His harshest words were for the Pharisees and Scribes who talked about faith but didn't live it- hypocrites. As for the brief mention about changing churches if our minister has a nice car. I think that's quite off base ministers should be aware of image but many ministers treat their congregations like any other job and work hard to provide their congregations with support and from that start personal enterprises like writing books. There is nothing wrong with spending that money on themselves.

People who hold themselves in higher esteem and wish to pass judgment on others get "taken down" all the time. The "Bishop Long's" of the world cannot help anyone when they need help themselves. This is a time of purging!

This dialogue is great and very much needed, particularly in the context of the "black" church experience. However, I amazed at how an allegation has turned into truth. More is needed than what has been presented, because too many lives have been hurt by allegations or lawsuits that were later found not to have any merit. Jumping to conclusions really goes against that one is innocent until proven guilty. I guess the only conclusion I can come to is that many have their own biases on each side and see this as an opportunity voice their side even if it is only their current reality.

Thank you, Poster Zero2sixty. My inclinations were right all along. This evil man , Eddie long took over a real Baptist's Church trust and tax exempt status, and incorporated everthing in his own name, for the purpose gaining all the property, cash and profits for only the glory or Eddie Long ONLY. That the so called church should not mention Jesus or the Bible, is insidious, a shame, and a great con. All those people giving him money by the large basketful have been conned and lied to around the world. This man had no intentions to advocate religion and spirituality. it was all a scam. It was all rap/rock, celeberty groupies, singing, stomping, sex, hate, lies, and deceit, in the name of money. I felt something was wrong from the beginng when I never heard anything about Jesus's Love coming from any one of them. It's sad how all those members were truly misguided by that devil.

This is for all of the New Birth "CHURCH" members that feel that this is an issue between Eddie Long and his wife, his kids and his "CHURCH" members.... According to the paper work filed with the Georgia Secretary of State, in 1987 when Long became its pastor, the church restated its articles of incorporation, depriving its members of a vote and omitted all mention of Jesus Christ and the Bible. Long was named CEO. It's not operating in the capacity of a "CHURCH" but as a Corporation stated in Article 9 has a sole purpose of receiving and maintaining real or personal properties, or both” and “to use and apply the whole or part of income for charitable, religious, scientific, literary or educational purposes” related to the corporation’s NONPROFIT status. In Article 6, The Corporation hereby elects to have NO members.... I can go on, but I'll post the source so that you can read for yourself. I hope the "MEMBERS" of this so-called church do some investigating before they give this man more of their money.

Your investigation works for you. God Bless You. Worship somewhere else. Leave those people alone.

If you are Christian, or a member of any faith experience, have you researched the corporate filings for your house of faith? For most, there is little practical connection between the two.

What I hear you saying is that Long owns New Birth. OK. No newsflash there. Leave those people alone. They made informed decisions as to who they wanted to be their pastor and where they wanted their membership. You know best because...?

It's going to be impossible for the church to reconcile a liberal society's demand for equal treatment of gays with the FACT that the Bible asserts that homosexuality is described as an abomination.

That will happen in the same way the Bible calls women "silly" is being discounted or the Psalms admonition to dash your enemies baby's ahead against a rock is paid no heed. We wear clothes with blended fabrics despite the Old Testament's prohibition against such. The Church has no problem with making sense and serving God in practical, contemporary ways.
12:09 PM on 10/13/2010
To my knowledge, all of the topics you mention are in the Old Testament whose laws were nullified by the New Testament and the teachings of Christ. However, the mention of homosexuality as an abomination is in the New Testament and therefore proponents of gay rights/gay marriage will have a much harder time trying to get devout Christians, such as myself, to dismiss it.

Very few churches today are Bible believing, While I'm sure this is true in the case of churches across theboard my focus is particularly on the African-American church. Instead of the church leading the people in most communities it has become a reflection of it. There are no absolutes and everything goes. The leadership instead of offering teaching of truth in th gospel conducts itself in which are anti-Biblical, contrary to its teaching. We all know going as far back as Daddy Grace in the fifties and Father Divine (Remember Divine Highway) in the fortiesas well as the most notorious Jim Jones. All these charlatans, yet they led thodands of misguided followers. Haven't we learned that when you desecrate God's House with apostates sin is bound to prevail. Eddie Long is now the modern false teacher. The sadness is at so many who are even "educated folkes" can be s mislead. But it is not surprising because if one is not spiritual they canot discern truth from lirs.

I am a Christian. I do not believe in the Bible. I believe in God. I see the Bible as a tool that leads to God and is reflective of such. I believe in God.
02:12 AM on 10/15/2010
FIRST LET ME SAY THIS. SAYING YOU ARE A CHRISTIAN DOESN'T MAKE YOU A CHRISTIAN. YOU HAVE TO BE BORN AGAIN TO BECOME A CHRISTIAN. ONE MUST BELIEVE WHAT CHRIST HAS TO SAY, WHICH IS RECORDED IN THE BIBLE. THE BIBLE WAS WRITTEN SO THAT WE WHO HAVE COME ALONG 2000 YRS LATER WOULD HAVE A RECORD OF WHAT CHRIST DID AND SAID. DO YOU BELIEVE THE HISTORY BOOKS YOU WERE RAISED ON? OR WHAT ABOUT WHAT YOUR FAMILY HAS TOLD YOU ABOUT YOUR FAMILY TREE? WHAT ABOUT YOUR BIRTH CERTIFICATE? WERE YOU CAPABLE AT THE TIME OF YOUR BIRTH TO VERIFY THAT - HEY THIS THE TRUTH. DO YOU GET THE PICTURE? THERE HAS TO BE A RECORD - GOD IS NO IDIOT. EVERY CAR MANUFACTURER HAS A MANUAL ON HOW TO PROPERLY MAINTAIN AND OPERATE THE VEHICLE THAT THEY CREATED. WOW. WHAT A CONCEPT. ARE THEY SMARTER AND WISER THAN THE GOD OF CREATION, GIVEN YOU DO BELIEVE GOD CREATED MAN. GOD LOVES YOU AND IT IS A FACT WHETHER YOU BELIEVE IT OR NOT THAT JESUS DIED FOR YOUR SINS. WE MUST COME TO GOD ONLY THROUGH JESUS.
02:12 AM on 10/15/2010
PLEASE I ASK YOU SIR RIGHT NOW RIGHT WHERE YOU ARE, REPENT AND ASK GOD TO FORGIVE YOU. ADMIT THAT JESUS DIED FOR YOUR SINS AND ASK HIM TO COME INTO YOUR HEART AND LIFE. TELL HIM YOU WANT TO KNOW HIM AND KNOW THAT HE IS REALLY REALLY REAL. IF YOU WILL DO THAT AND MEAN IT YOU WILL EXPERIENCE SUCH AN INNER CHANGE THAT YOU COULD HAVE NEVER IMAGED. HE WILL HELP YOU BY HIS SPIRIT (THE HOLY SPIRIT) TO UNDERSTAND THE BIBLE, NOT DISCOUNT IT. LET HIM BECOME A LIVING REALITY IN YOUR LIFE. WHERE MEN MESS UP IS THEY RELY ON THEIR OWN UNDERSTANDING THAT IS WHY WE HAVE A WORLD IN CHAOS. WHAT IF EVERYONE REALLY KNEW GOD AND HAD A PERSONAL AND INTIMATE RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM. NO MORE MURDERS, NO MORE RAPES, NO MORE ROBBERIES, NO MORE HATE CRIMES OR HATE, ETC... DON'T RELY ON YOUR OWN UNDERSTANDING OF GOD. GO TO HIM AND THEM GO TO THE MANUAL

As a openly gay ordained minister, I say it's better to be truthful and not hide behind a robe. I know of living and dead Pastors that lied or chose to be silent about their sexuality- in most cases the whole church knows, and to some degree it does not matter, in the end- it's about the love of GOD.

TO YOU SIR. JUST BECAUSE ONE ADMITS OR CONFESSES ONES LIFESTYLE DOESN'T MAKE ONE OK. SEE THE FUNNY THING IS THIS. TIMES CHANGE, PEOPLE CHANGE, MINDSETS CHANGE, TECHNOLOGIES CHANGE, CLIMATES CHANGE, ETC... BUT THE THING ABOUT GOD IS , IS THAT HE DOESN'T CHANGE. IF HE FELT A CERTAIN WAY ABOUT AN ISSUE 5000 YRS AGO HE DOESN'T CHANGE HOW HE FEELS ABOUT IT BECAUSE WE DO. OUR ACCEPTING IT AND SAYING THINGS LIKE (WHAT KIND OF LOVING GOD IS HE IF HE DOESN'T ACCEPT ALL MEN THE WAY THEY ARE) DOESN'T FORCE HIM TO SAY HMMM I BETTER CHANGE MY FEELINGS ON THAT ISSUE. IF HE MADE MAN AND WOMAN HE KNOWS WHAT IS BEST FOR MAN AND WOMAN. WHAT ADULT WHO IS OLDER AND WISER THAN THEIR TEN YEAR OLD LETS SAID TEN YR OLD TELL THEM WHAT IS BEST FOR THEM. THEY HAVE EMOTIONS AND FEELINGS THEY WANT TO GET OUT BUT YOU BEING THE OLDER AND LETS NOT FORGET THE WISER ONE KNOW YOU CAN'T ALWAYS LET THEM GET THOSE THINGS OUT BECAUSE IT IS NOT IN THEIR BEST INTEREST. HOW DO WE TELL THE CREATOR THAT WE KNOW BETTER THAN HIM AND EXPECT HIM TO SAY OH OK I GUESS SO. LAWS ARE MADE TO KEEP A CERTAIN ORDER AND WHEN THEY ARE OBEYED SOCIETY AS A WHOLE FUNCTIONS BETTER. OUR CREATOR SET UP CERTAIN LAWS, JUST LIKE NATURE. GOD KNOWS WHAT IS BEST FOR US TO ELIMINATE OUR DOWNFALL
