Guess who's pissing off über-hater Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church now (besides gays, soldiers, politicians, Americans, the French, or any of the other regulars on their crazy laundry list)? Nerds -- specifically the nerds at the San Diego Comic-Con, the massive annual gathering of comic book fans and collectors. Why, you may ask? For having "false idols" like Superman and Batman.

Seriously.

Here's Westboro's "reasoning," via their creepy, crazy website:

Are you kidding?! If these people would spend even some of the energy that they spend on these comic books, reading the Bible, well no high hopes here. They have turned comic book characters into idols, and worship them they do! Isaiah 2:8 Their land also is full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made: 9 And the mean man boweth down, and the great man humbleth himself: therefore forgive them not. It is time to put away the silly vanities and turn to God like you mean it. The destruction of this nation is imminent -- so start calling on Batman and Superman now, see if they can pull you from the mess that you have created with all your silly idolatry.

Just when you think they can't get any more insane than picketing the funerals of hate crimes victims and soldiers killed in battle, the Phelps clan sinks to a whole new level of crazy.

Personally, I think the more we see of Westboro and their extremism, the better. It shows the true, unhinged face of people who oppose equality and want to impose their radical beliefs on an entire nation.

Take a good look, America. And hug your local nerd in solidarity.

One of the best days of my life was when I figured out that religion did not necessarily have anything to do with God. It left me free to enjoy the comraderie and the music and think for myself.

They don't know what they stepped in. I can see it now... Daleks with rainbow signs that say "YOU WILL OBEY" ....'Galactus is Coming!' They won't even get it. :)

I don't think too many people have ever been killed in the name of Batman or Superman.

IT would be the ultimate cosmic sense of justice if a much-maligned comicbook nerd were to give this Phelps fellow an uber-wedgie, and steal his lunch money.

And then stuff him into a locker just for good measure.

The Phelps family aka Westboro Baptist Church...am I the only one who thought this; I have a gut feeling that this family is much closer than we know.

Great, now they've discovered a new reason to hate me. Guess I'm not a one trick pony any more.

Sooooo..... one must assume that a homosexual, Jewish, comic-book-reading soldier would pretty much make fred phelp's head explode.

Hang on, I'm calling the pentagon to see a) if they have on on hand, and b) if we can borrow him for just a sec.

anybody really interested has probably seen this, but just sharing a link with quite a few pics.

When I first heard about it, I couldn't figure out why Westboro would 'protest' at SDCC. your quote from their hatesite almost makes sense. or at least as much sense as they ever make…

Oh, don't worry. Nerds, as a subculture, tend to be creative people and will find creative ways to make fun of the Phelps clan. Makes me want to go to Comic-Con in my Vash the Stampede cosplay (which would really piss them off if they knew who the character was because the character is male and I am a female), or maybe confuse them by dressing up as one of the other characters I like to dress as Hikari of Haibane Renmei - a cute little angel-girl.

I remember Anime Expo 2003. The con was scheduled in the same center as some televangelist's con. There were several people dressed as a character from the same series that Vash is from, Wolfwood - a gun-toting reacher who carries a huge wrapped cross around. I remember being at the art tables when I saw a person from the religious convention come right up and slip an evangelizing tract into the cross-prop that one of the Wolfwood cosplayers had leaned against a pillar. "Wolfwood's" reaction was priceless. Just a jaw-drop.

I'm a Christian, actually, but probably not a "real" one to Westboro, since I'm also proudly a nerd.

I've seen pictures of the counter-protest. The nerds are standing up for themselves very well. Lots of humorous and sarcastic signs.

Today Batman...tomorrow Mr. Spock. I will look for these folks at the next SF convention I attend.

interesting observations about Mister Phelps made at this link, http://kanewj.com/wbc/
It's quite possible that the Westboro church, which is really just Fred Phelps' extended family, may be nothing more than a group of people looking to sue anyone that, say, gets offended and punches Fred in the face.

I do not wish ill on anyone. However, I am grateful that Phelps is getting older day by day.
