Herman Cain's Implausible Spin

Posted: 10/31/11 09:20 PM ET

Earlier this month, Herman Cain told the protesters occupying Wall Street that "if you don't have a job... blame yourself." I hope he takes his own advice and accepts personal responsibility if he loses his job as a presidential candidate. This morning Politico dropped the bombshell that may well derail the surging the Cain Train. The report said that he had been accused of sexually harassing two women while he led the National Restaurant Association from 1996-1999.

Cain and his team initially stonewalled, but belatedly responded to the accusations: "I have never sexually harassed anyone -- anyone," said Cain. "And absolutely these are false allegations."

This may be true, but the manner in which it was handled from the outset makes it appear as if Cain has something to hide. At first Cain's campaign dodged questions by making it appear as if the candidate was unaware of past allegations. Cain spokesperson J.D. Gordon told Politico that the candidate indicated that he was "vaguely familiar" with the charges.

This is just nonsense. If one is unjustly accused of sexual harassment it has to be a jarring experience, not one that is brushed aside or easily forgotten. The only way Cain is "vaguely familiar" with the charges is if he is a serial harasser and has had so many victims that he can't keep track of them.

Cain's next implausible move was to take the "I'm too important and busy to notice" defense. He claimed that he wasn't aware of allegations because he "had thousands of people working for me" over the decades at various enterprises.

Yeah, and I've eaten thousands of meals that I can't remember, but I do recall the few that gave me food poisoning -- in the same way that Cain would remember the two women who accused him of being a sexual menace.

Next, Cain said he could not comment, "Until I see some facts or some concrete evidence." What's with the word parsing from a candidate who promised not to behave like a traditional politician? Why was it so difficult to refrain from equivocating and to simply tell the truth?

The embattled candidate then tried classic denial: "I am not going to comment on that." Finally, an exasperated and heavy breathing Cain glared at a questioning reporter and tried to turn the tables by brazenly asking, "Have you ever been accused of sexual harassment?"

It appears that Herman Cain doesn't understand that it is irrelevant if the reporter was drunk and had just come from a birthday party where cake was consumed off the tan buttocks of a stoned stripper. The reporter isn't an avowed Christian conservative running for president of the United States in the puritanical "family values" party.

Let me put it in simplistic branding language that Cain might comprehend: Don't bill yourself as a pepperoni pizza if you are actually a submarine sandwich. Either you are who you say you are -- or you're just another self-righteous Republican phony.

The fact that he dissembled on such a clear-cut issue and couldn't answer basic questions on whether he sexually harassed employees is a really bad sign.

The other troubling aspect of the situation is that Herman Cain appears completely unaware that both women left the NRA receiving separation packages that were in the five-figure range.

"If the restaurant association did a settlement, I wasn't even aware of it and I hope it wasn't for much," Cain told Fox News. "If there was a settlement, it was handled by some of the other officers at the restaurant association."

I'm sorry, but this man was not a lowly office assistant -- he was the CEO. I have a difficult time believing that the politically ambitious Cain doesn't know more about how these potentially career ending allegations were resolved. While he may not remember the specific dollar amounts of these legal settlements, it is improbable that he did not know that they had occurred. After all, as the man in charge, what did he think happened to the money that disappeared from his budget and landed into the bank accounts of his accusers?

Mr. self-reliance also loses points for playing the "liberal media" card. A statement on Cain's campaign website says "inside-the-Beltway media" and "political trade press" are "casting aspersions on his character and spreading rumors that never stood up as facts."

No, these reporters are just doing their jobs, in much the same way that they grilled Democrats Bill Clinton, John Edwards, Gary Hart and Eliott Spitzer when allegations of sexual impropriety surfaced.

I'm not sure if Cain is innocent or guilty, but I do know he has to do a better job of crisis management. The former Godfather's Pizza executive should know the old axiom: If you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen.

Hah, not likely. The Republicans will find a way to white wash this and blame the women, similar to how Dems white washed Obama's alliance with Rev. Wright.

Cain should have been dismissed as a candidate for president on the basis of his total lack of qualifications for the office, and not only that he is an unscrupulous hypocrite and liar. In any case, he's finished.

The bombshell Politico article on Cain's alleged sexual harassment dropped on October 30th. So where does that put him on the countdown today?

Ah, yes: 5, 4, 3, 2 . . . . . .

Oh, I love how the pundits say this incident of Cain's may not effect him in the campaigns or turn off his supporters. Of course why would that surprise anyone....the Repubs cheared at the example of letting a young man die if he didn't have Health Ins., they booed the Gay Soldier who was defending the US...and cheared Cain when he said "it's your fault if you don't have a job"...the list goes on.

It looks like Cain has violated the confidentiality agreement by making the statement that one of the ladies, who was paid her year's salary, was incompetent at her job. This in itself is slanderous and should null and void the agreement. Hopefully attorneys will sort this out and we'll hear the other side. Obviously, CEO's don't settle if there isn't some shred of truth in the issue. I can understand when you can be set up, but the facts usually weigh out. Generally when someone has committed sexually aggressive acts there are more snakes in the wood pile. Powerful people can often destroy someone's life or credibility, but their character flaws usually at some time down the road will trip them up. Although Clarence Thomas, whose investigation in the Annita Hill accusations was sworn in there have been interviews of Ms Hill long since and her story holds much more water, Fox Noise is trying to equate this to a racial motivation, as if these loonie have ever cared before, as Ann Coulter states, "the liberals are trying to discredit OUR blacks", as if they owned them. Thomas has many issues to be investigated that should impeach him if found to be truthful, but his Power will probably keep him insulated. Cain isn't as powerful outside the board room.

As someone licensed to practice laws, I made a good income filing these lawsuits. For a minimum amount of paperwork and filing fees, it's a guaranteed check for a percentages of their legal cost toward settlements

I already know the settlement via her attorney Joel P. Bennett , who begging for full disclosure, now that he cashed her check and been paid in full. He's clearly an Ambulance Chaser

No good Attorney accepts settlements, if 100% confident they can win more. They are experts at client manipulations for a sure thing.

They accepted what is considered the standard minimum for what many tern as nuisance claims or 60% of legal fees to defend

Clarence Thomas doesn't have even a remote chance at impeachment, because all Congress, and our Current President have spouses that lobby for their services. We have several in congress that refused to pay their income taxes till caught with full legal impunity

The fact that her Lawyer is speaking so openly about this case after settlement demands New laws BE ENACTED THAT ALL ATTORNEYS VIOLATING THE CONFIDENTIALITY AGREEMENTS NEED TO SURRENDER ALL LEGAL FEES, in my opinion.

We all remember the Duke Lacrosse case and Nifong's complete belief in the rape allegations even till disbarment, and the recent DSK rape case in NYC. Minority woman have been taught the fastest way toward riches and Wealth in America is accuse somebody of means of wrong doing and settle out of court if possible

I doubt your veracity with the very first line, "As someone licensed to practice laws..." That is a phrase no legal professional would use. It is incoherent. Also, I note several untrue statements in your post (First Lady is a lobbyist; misunderstanding legal fees and confidentiality agreements; etc.). In short, your effort to gloss up your opinions with incorrect "facts" weakens your entire argument, making it ridiculous instead of persuasive.

Liked the article, but this comment,

"Finally, an exasperated and heavy breathing Cain glared at a questioning reporter and tried to turn the tables by brazenly asking, "Have you ever been accused of sexual harassment?"

I didn't really see that way. When this reporter (Jonathan Martin) confronted Cain in this exchange, Cain looked about as odd as I've ever seen him look. He was almost petulant, and this is not quite the word I want. He looked weird. He was looking down, almost in reluctance, like he had been caught by surprise and didn't know what to say. Even his retort, "Have you ever been accused..." seemed subdued and almost soft spoken. What struck me about his later answers though, was that he said that he didn't address it, because the accusations had come from anonymous sources... but the question that Jonathan Martin asked him, was generic, "Have you ever been accused..." And I agree totally with Wayne here, that ANYONE would have been able to give that a yes or no. It was not a difficult question and Cain had plenty of time before this interview to think about it. I think he was afraid of the question, and now I think we see why, with his rolling "revelations" over the past few days. This is not a man i would place any confidence in, for as Wayne brings out in this article, it seems that Cain is not what he claims.

Thanks for this article Wayne, but all he had to do was talk about it first & let the cat out of the bag. He may very well be innocent but & yes there is a but, his actions show different. Look, as we all know there are no pure as the driven snow people, everybody got their own secret so since this was bound to be released, you release it first. The American people aren't stuck on stupid as some would like to believe, we are thinkers. There are some things we can/will tolerate, we tolerate the Republicans because they are Americans too although you wonder. We aren't looking for popularity here because we got too many reality shows to choose from for that. We are looking for the (Best) person to run & lead this country in good leadership.

I don't doubt that many were accused during "that faze"... But you don't forget it, do you???

I'll ask it: if Cain said he never participated in sexual harassment why not believe him? Would a politician actually lie? Why would a politician lie? Why would a politician who has links to the inscrutable Koch Brothers, of all people lie?

The Daily Caller reports http://dailycaller.com/2011/10/28/spooky-us-debt-to-surpass-gdp-on-halloween/ :

“As children across America costume themselves as ghouls, ghosts, goblins and former North African dictators Monday night, they may have missed the most spine-chilling scare of the day. According to calculations based on the International Monetary Fund’s World Economic Outlook, on All Hallows’ Eve the United States’ total debt will surpass its Gross Domestic Product for the first time since World War II.

That means the average American’s share of government debt is more than an average American makes in a year. Spooky!

On October 19 Bloomberg released a chart showing that per capita gross government debt would to exceed per capita GDP in the very near future. As Bloomberg put it, “America’s bills are about to exceed its paycheck.â€

Herman Cain’s 9-9-9 plan does not address this national debt problem. There are no significant cuts. Neither have any of the other candidates offered any such cuts.

Ron Paul’s Restore America plan: http://www.ronpaul2012.com/the-issues/ron-paul-plan-to-restore-america/ cuts $1 trillion in the first year. It is the only plan among the 2012 GOP presidential field that offers real and substantive cuts in line with what this country desperately needs.

In reality their will only be two choices in future bankruptucy or . . .

Forgive all PERSONAL debts in America with the stroke of a pen and let the sorrows land where they may. . . and may God have mercy on the ultra rich.
