On October 22, the New York Division of Criminal Justice introduced a new rape kit, which aims to collect more accurate evidence from survivors of sexual assaults. Woefully, it's the first update to the sexual offense evidence collection kit in 20 years, during which time there have been major advancements in forensic technology. The revised kit dictates a more comprehensive exam of rape victims and allows for more DNA samples to be taken. It has been designed to be more male victim-friendly. In addition, the revised kit comes with an instructional video to train medical professionals in collecting evidence in the most scientific way. This long overdue version will greatly assist in the state's effort to spread New York City's success in arresting rape culprits and eliminating the backlog of untested rape kits, a serious problem plaguing other cities nationwide.—Akkida McDowell
