I think it's suspicious that the board of health scheduled an 'emergency' meeting in less than 24 hours, on election day, about the 'caregiver' role.

Currently, the caregiver is required to grow, process and distribute the medical marijuana. As a nurse I'm not required to make the drug that I give a patient. Further, I have to go thru a pharmacist to obtain the medicine I provide to my patients. The administration of medicine is within the scope of practice of a nurse caregiver. So, it seems to me that by providing a medication (medical marijuana) to a patient, you are in fact, a caregiver.

Growing, processing and distributing medical marijuana on the other hand, doesn't really have anything to do with the caregiving role, except where it facilitates the ability of the caregiver to complete his/her role. Clearly the grower/processor is necessary in order to provide medicine for the patient.

I think the board of health, and everyone else, needs to take a step back, let go of the emotional baggage we have about marijuana, and start treating it like the medicine it is intended to be. We need to work together to provide a system of safe distribution of consistent, high quality, medicine to people in need of symptom relief.

In the vacuum of leadership and reasonable regulation by our state boards, patients are being forced to go through distributors without any outside recourse should they receive inferior or altered marijuana.

Time to take the Board of Health out to pasture. The public spoke on this topic at length 3 months ago. So many people wanted to be heard on the issue that the meeting had to be postponed the first time around, and a much larger venue was booked for round 2. That's when the Language of the CareGiver clause was changed. The Public Voted for Medical Marijuana in the state of Colorado. We fully intended that this Medical Marijuana would be available to sick people, with out them having to kill them selves to get it.

So thank you Charles Grassley, Tom Latham, Steve King in Washington, and all the RWNJ in the Iowa Legislature, Clel Baudler leading the charge. The last bastation of reefer madness.

You have now placed many Iowans back to the reality of the black market and fear of police.

We made out case, brought all the up to date research and the Doctors to the Iowa Board of Pharmacy table.

In the end, all 100 of us who testified are admitted criminals.
