Kabbalah: A Sacred Science of the Future

Posted: 01/04/11 06:07 PM ET

I enjoyed reading "The Jewish View of Creationism" by Rabbi Adam Jacobs on Huffington Post. Coincidentally, we at Kabbalah Publishing are re-editing one of the Rav's previous works in which he discusses time and space from the perspective of Science and the Bible. (The title is Navigating the Universe and it will be released as a paperback in May 2011.) Time and space have always been, and continue to be, an important aspect of kabbalistic study. Understanding these concepts is critical to the fulfillment of our purpose in this world. The Rav began discoursing on these ideas more than 20 years ago, and his powerful words are even more relevant today. I could not have said it better. I hope you enjoy this:

The only time the average scientist will turn to the Bible is when he thinks he can "prove" it wrong on grounds of empirical evidence, never realizing that the code contained within the Bible is every bit as empirical as any experiment performed in his laboratory. Yet if these same scientists took the effort to investigate the true, internal meanings of the biblical predictions, they might be in for a pleasant surprise. In addition to gaining a new perspective into the Bible, they might very well come to an understanding of Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle, which today so confuses them.

Kabbalah holds out the promise of a real science of the future. A valid futurology is indeed possible, this despite the fact that the future appears more complex and unpredictable with every passing moment. As astronomers will testify, there is very little if any indeterminacy in the movements of our celestial neighbors. Astronomy, calendars, and almanacs all rely on what happened in the past to predict the future. These astronomical calculators enjoy wide respect, the simple reason being that unlike the predictions of physicists, economists, weather forecasters, and allopathic physicians, the predictions derived from the celestial movements very often achieve accuracy.

When Einstein revealed his theories of special and general relativity, Newtonian scientists had no choice but to reexamine old familiar and cherished concepts of space and time. Before Einstein's day, time was regarded as a continuous flow, like a river stretching back into the past and ahead into the future. Einstein proved that time is not absolute. Time depends on space and space depends on time. The two cannot be separated. One cannot be considered without also considering the other.

The famous "twins paradox" is perhaps the most familiar example of this phenomenon. One twin takes a faster-than-light rocket ship into space, while the stay-at-home twin waits for his brother to return some years later. When the space faring brother returns, he finds his earth-bound brother has aged a great deal, while he has not.

A space ship traveling at near light speed would enable such human clocks as heartbeat, brainwaves and blood flow, to slow down during the journey. Time adjusts to accomodate its spacial frame of reference. As bizarre as this may sound, it is true.

In Genesis we find people who lived many hundreds of years: Adam lived 930 years, Methusalech 969. Then, inexplicably, the average lifespan diminished to a low of only 47 years. Now the average lifespan is becoming progressively longer. Could it be that certain ages and civilizations are more conducive than others to achieving non-ordinary states of consciousness?

The dimensions of spacial consciousness as demonstrated by the twins paradox are, of course, vastly different from those with which we normally deal on the physical level. Yet this bizarre anomaly pervades every aspect of our daily lives.

Consider the example of two secretaries who, at the end of the working day, may be overheard discussing the day's routine: "The day dragged along," complains one. "I thought it would never end." Her friend conversely comments on how swiftly she thought the day went by. Here is an example of how consciousness affects time. The secretary who experienced time in slow motion is likely bored with her job and accomplishes little in the course of her day's work. Feeling down, depressed, unhappy with herself, she has aligned herself with the down side of earth's level, where time moves slowly. The other, meanwhile, gains satisfaction from her work and thus time for her moves swiftly.

Consider another scenario in which two people approach an elevator and both press the down button. After a brief time one impatiently remarks, "Why doesn't that elevator show up?" The other shrugs and points out the fact that the button to summon it has just been pushed. The former is obviously in a hurry to get where he is going, while the latter who is in no rush does not feel the same pressure as does his companion. Again we see how time varies according to how we perceive it.

With this behind us, we may now begin to understand how the space-time phenomenon makes possible prophecy and prediction. No prophecy was involved in knowing how the two secretaries or the two friends at the elevator would react. By knowing the internal space in which a person exists is sufficient to predict that person's potential behavior. The key to prediction is the ability to transcend the bounds of rational consciousness so that we may enter the universal state of mind in which past, present and future exist on the same multidimensional plane.

Einstein's Theory of Relativity destroyed the idea of universal time, and of an absolute past, present and future. His imagination led us to believe that in some sense the future already exists. Einstein never did fully explain why universal time no longer exists. After all, to understand the why of things was not then and unfortunately still is not within the province of science.

Uncertainty belongs to the world of physics. In the realm of metaphysics, reality is seen unwinding along a precise, predetermined route that must lead to an unalterable final state. The kabbalist understands that time depends upon a space reference, and there are infinite numbers of space-time references. Indeed, there are as many of them as there are inhabitants of planet Earth.

Our new interpretation of space-time sheds light on the question previously raised as to why people lived long lives closer to the time of the biblical Adam, and why the average lifespan decreased to a low point only to rise again. Adam and those immediately following him lived in a time of high spiritual consciousness. The further removed one is from the rigid framework of clock-time consciousness, the longer one's life is likely to be.

As we approach the Age of Aquarius, our space-time consciousness is being elevated. Time is slowing down for us and we shall experience a marked increase in the human life-span. However, this does not necessarily mean we will all move up to a higher frequency of consciousness. What will take place, however, is a general recognition that past, present and future are no longer fragmented, but are really one and the same.

The biblical parable concerning the Tower of Babel illustrates that although they lived in this upper frame of space-time reaping all the benefits of their state of being, that civilization did not necessarily achieve a spiritual awareness of Desire to Receive for the Sake of Sharing. However, because fragmented time hardly existed, their grasp of the universe was that of a highly evolved civilization.

Unlike the ancient civilization of Babel, our present civilization is dominated by the cosmic influence of the Age of Aquarius, the essence of which is Desire to Receive for the Sake of Sharing. It is not by chance that the knowledge of Kabbalah is, with each day, becoming more widespread and readily available.

As stated in Jeremiah 30:33: "And they shall teach no more every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, 'Know the Lord.' Rather everyone shall know Me, from the smallest to the highest."

Already we are beginning to witness a similarly advanced transition, as did the ancient civilization of Babel. In addition, we are about to experience a spiritual revival, the likes of which did not exist at the time of Babel. No longer is it necessary to accrue vast amounts of knowledge before delving into life's mysteries. In the Age of Aquarius, the ancient wisdom will be the domain of all.

Sometimes, the unknown can cause great anxiety & fear. I heavily rely on dreams: What they're saying? They led me to seek the RT help for Lyme's & just last week, I had another divine dream: A woman spoke to me...said to check my breasts. I went to seek immediate help. I have been diagnosed w/a certain type of breast cancer, known to go under the radar of a mammogram. Very sneaky! Yesterday, @ the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center...waiting for my MRI, I just so happened to be staring @ an archival pigment print, “Between Dreams”, taken on 3/26, my birthday. I could see my face reflected in the glass when I heard a beautiful voice coming from a changing room. A lady stepped out & I said, “You have a lovely voice.” She asked me why I was there. I just stared @ that print of dreams & the universe; told her about my recent one, which led me there. She was certain it was God’s doing…put me in her prayer circle & said, “Expect a miracle: It’s coming.” I felt chills all over. We hugged as we parting ways. And, I really began paying attn, more so than ever to everything...even songs on the radio that play...take on a whole different meaning, like Madonna’s “Like a Prayer”… “...your voice can take me there...” My one sister starting calling. We haven’t spoken in sometime. A miracle alone.

Beautifully stated wisdom. Yes indeed as we know it in modern society time is an illusion. The past and future exist only as thoughts in the present moment, there is only NOW. Time is a mental projection on the present moment to account for change and give us a way for out rational minds to try to make sense of the infinite. Clocks do not measure time, they are simply mechanical devices that like everything else, change in the moment. Clocks never show the past or the future only now. You can never arrive at anything but now so the concept of time we live in becomes a mental prison that we compartmentalize our life and experience by, with often disastrous consequences. We certain would live a lot longer if we didn't subject ourselves unnecessarily to this kind of stress. This is part of the paradigm of materialism where everything is reduced to its surface appearance and the why or the meaning is dismissed as unimportant when actually it is the very core of creation. The transformation we and our world are undergoing right now is dissolving this dysfunctional paradigm and creating a new relationship with time where we can see it as a function of the eternal now........

Not sure that I agree with any of it, but I'll admit it would be cool if you were right.

This is one of the biggest piece of pseudo-science written from the judaic perspective. Like many pseudo-science this cites random know facts, mix them with mystic jargon and of course end with aberrant conclusions obscured by ambivalent language. Bravo!!!

This article really simplifies things. Everything we want to know past and future is right there in the book. We don't have to pay for all that silly reaserch and digging up fossils and such.
Book Priest can once again translate the Bible for us and take their rightfull place as leaders of our society. Like the good ole days in the middle ages.

"These astronomical calculators enjoy wide respect, the simple reason being that unlike the predictions of physicists, economists, weather forecasters, and allopathic physicians, the predictions derived from the celestial movements very often achieve accuracy."

Jacobs doesn't understand that the "astronomers" who predict celestial events are in fact relying on physics to do so.

I couldn't have assessed or provided a better indication of the intellectual quality and basis of your article than you have. "No longer is it necessary to accrue vast amounts of knowledge before delving into life's mysteries."

Mr. Berg (continued). It is said that all of the Torah can be understood from the first letter, B = container, house, support of the eternal. Aleph, fire, consciousness, is contained in the psychic container of Bayt. Any talk of a redeemer/Messiah is about the need to free these sparks which have been locked into dogmas and hates. Thus is Cabala; a truth which is periodically lost and rediscovered every few centuries by Jewish scholars.

Bayt Raysh Aleph Sheen Yod Tav = Bereshyt = B, 2, container. R, 200 container. A, 1, living energy. S, 300, breath, Aleph's active agent in the universe. Y, 10, the living, contradictory projection of Aleph. T, 400, tabernacle/sanctuary of Aleph. Translation: the descent of Aleph through two levels, 2, and 200, to become breath-air (Sephiroth 3), which we can perceive in meditation, which becomes its own opposite/contradiction (hopefully, then aware of itself) in a dual universe, which finally concretizes in the earth-female-form (as ‘concrete mind’ consciousness, the psychology of the masses). See The Cipher of Genesis, Carlo Suares (also his Second Coming of Reb YHShWH)(if you guys are publishers, he has an out of print book that costs over $200, used, when you can get it. Why not republish it?)

Good grief. The Cipher of Genesis goes for 200 dollars !!! Now I've really got to dig out my copy from wherever it is. Seriously, I have that book. Read it cover to cover a few times when I was a young man. I didn't understand it then. I doubt I'd understand it now, and by understanding I mean knowledge of the mechanics of the process involved.
11:52 AM on 01/10/2011
Mikdow, one of his OTHER books is $200. His 'Second Coming...' is much easier; written just before he died. It is best to come to his stuff with a background in other materials. He as in Paris during the time of Bennett/Gurdjieff, Krishnamurti (see Suares's book on K), Sartre, etc., and all have the same message, identical (but buried, Sufi, etc.). I never 'got' Gurdjieff, but have no problem with Bennett's restatement. See index in Making a Soul, Bennett, re 'yes and no', possibilities (vs. action), okidanokh, pattern of behavior.

There is no container nor space around it. Life is movement, breath, expansion, eternal.
11:57 AM on 01/10/2011
Mr. Berg, life is not eternal, nor is consciousness. It is an alternation of life-death, conscious and non-conscious, which is what a breath is, in-out. Cabala denies the linear, thus 'In the beginning..'' is very wrong. All energies in the Jewish 'alphabet' are acting simultaneously, in the point which is the eternal. Some wrongly think 'duration' is equivalent to eternal. The 'one' confusing picture of all that is, crammed into an instant of no-time, is spread out in this linear world so we can sort it out.
01:37 PM on 01/10/2011
syllable, re your “There is no container nor space around it. Life is movement, breath, expansion, eternal.” A breath is a movement, in-out. A duality. You have contradicted yourself twice in only one sentence. Movement is always in reference to a fixed point, if not the walls of the container. Expansion implies a reference point, as does time. Eternal and duration are not the same. Eternal is not expansion forever in time or in space. If you don’t like the concept of container, think of the Big Bang as expanding against resistance (Dark Matter?). A chick embryo needs the resistance of the shell, not too much, nor to little.
oops, see my reply to 'Mr. Berg', above and below, which should have been addressed to you. Apologies to Mr. Berg.

Jeremiah was crying and praying for a modification of the terrible prophecies, and it seems that he was told not to cry and that the people he was praying for did not diserve it. He was told that it was impossible for him to find one pious person in Jerusalem........
Time has gone and history repeats itself, the region of the world with the highest disrespect to God's orders of not lying not killing not stealing.......do you know where it is.
Are we surprised with the prophecies regarding the new disrespectful of God's orders and their brothers in humanity?

After all it is so simple we are put on a limited time path to make choices..........
Is'nt it this what counts? Duality, twin's paradox, relativvity of time... What counts is this very limited time path that each one of us is given to find what God wants through100% preserved message!

What a wonderful article! Rarely have I seen an essay that presents such a clear proof why people who understand religion better than they understand science should really just shut up about science.

In the thought experiment about two secretaries comparing how long they perceived the day to be, the article states, "Here is an example of how consciousness affects time." That's wrong; stupidly wrong. Time passed at the same rate for both of them. Both their watches stayed in sync. The difference in their perception of time is due to problems with human perception, not time.

Analogous thought experiment: My father (age 84) and I walk into a room. He says it's chilly; I say it's warm. Does our age affect the temperature? No. Old people have poorer circulation that causes them to perceive things as being colder than they are. A thermometer reveals the truth.

This isn't just a quibble, it highlights a huge difference between scientific and religious thinking. Religious people -- especially "religious moderates" -- trust their minds too much. They're willing to make important conclusions without objective evidence. Scientists understand that our minds are flawed and biased, and use objective measurements to verify our perception.

This is why religion keeps getting the wrong answers, and why science consistently makes religion look foolish.

Since the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings, nuclear weapons have been detonated on over two thousand occasions for testing purposes and demonstration purposes. What religion or pol did that? That is why 'science' has the wrong answers and should be regulated.

For your Dad add a little humidity. He and you will be more comfortable.
09:50 PM on 01/06/2011
"That is why 'science' has the wrong answers and should be regulated."
that statement only makes sense if you assume that "science has answers"
the scientific and engineering knowledge needed to make and detonate nukes has no bearing on the morality of making or using those devices - science does not speak to that issue

"For your Dad add a little humidity. He and you will be more comfortable. "
this misses the point - namely that the temperature is not dependent on how the two persons perceive it
02:06 PM on 01/07/2011
Scientists didn't make the decision to detonate these nuclear weapons -- politicians did, many of whom (especially as to Hiroshima and Nagasaki) were Christians.
10:15 PM on 01/06/2011
Agree with everything but the slam against "moderates". How on earth could moderates be more oblivious of objectivity than fundamentalists?
Many scientists are religious moderates, valuing religion while not taking it literally.

How do religious people "know" anything about God? E.g., how do they know whether God disapproves of homosexuality?

A fundamentalist can say, "I have this book. I assume it's the authentic word of God. And the book says God disapproves of homosexuality." This is a logical argument whose only weakness is the assumption about the book's authenticity. If I could prove to him that the Bible is NOT authentic, I would expect his attitude about God to change. If they don't, I've shown he's not being rational.

A moderate might respond that God loves homosexuals. But how does he know that? He does not assume the Bible to be the literal word of God. He's obviously ignoring every word it says about homosexuality. And by his own admission, his beliefs are based largely on what feels right to him. His assumption is, "My heart tells me the truth about God", a claim I can't disprove.

What can be less objective than than saying, "I know this is true, because I believe it".
10:39 PM on 01/07/2011
"How on earth could moderates be more oblivious of objectivity than fundamentalists?"

Making psedoscientific articles like the above one and pretending it aint anything like creationism.
12:22 PM on 01/06/2011
So what we have here is Jewish mysticism hawking a book as the most recent claimant in the long line stretching from Anna Baptists to Zoroastrianism claiming that science is but an off shoot of them and owes it success to their visions will ultimately be proved true by science.

Science is a multi-generational effort fact finding mission influenced by past and current culture of politics, economics and sociology. Science is influenced by culture but in turn, science influences and generates part of the current culture. Science is not just fact but it is culture as well. Science as culture tells us more about the current cultural rather than the natural limits of our imagination, knowledge and behavior.

Science is multi-generational multi-disciplinary endeavor with each step built on the past efforts be they successful or failures. Unlike science, religion does not learn from it’s failures only it’s successes.

Science is fact and culture but owes it successes and failure to people. Religion and mystics are redesigning the prosceniums of their belief with science as scaenae frons.

Yes, for some odd reason those stubborn scientists don't spend a lot of time pondering kabbalah, age of aquarius consciousness expansion and antediluvian spirit consciousness-induced relativistic time dilation.  What rubes.

I mean, it says right there in the Bible "there will be war" and then later on there was war!  Explain THAT!
