Royal Bride Catherine to Wed in Embroidered Flats

Posted: 03/04/2011 10:44 am

If there's anything a girl loves more than dresses, it's shoes. Despite the fantastically whimsical stilettos sketched by such shoe maestros as Manolo Blahnik and Giuseppe Zanotti for Catherine's big day, the royal bride-to-be will actually wed in flats.

As I revealed on February 19th in a story on Catherine's royal wedding day look, the future royal has commissioned four pairs of shoes for her wedding day -- each with different heel heights. She will wear the lowest-heeled pair to walk down the aisle at Westminster Abbey, and from what royal insiders tell me, the shoes (more like slippers) will be covered with multiple layers of silk, and heavily embroidered.

***For more royal wedding news, visit our Royal Wedding 2011 page.***

After the ceremony, there will be a lunch reception at Buckingham Palace, a balcony appearance (hopefully sealed with a kiss), an official wedding photo shoot, and then the evening dinner and dance. So there will be at least one dress (and shoes) change as the day goes on, and plenty of opportunities for the new princess to rock those sky-high stilettos!

Stilletos buy orthopedic surgeon's yachts. They are bad for body and worse for your feet.

Why not? It's not like we're going to see her feet anyway.

Makes total sense. You can't even see the shoes under the dress, much less the legs, which heals make look better. And it beats planting a facer while walking down the isle.

Good for her. In an unsteady (nervous) situation....be rock solid on your feet. I can trip on air, so need all the support I can get when walking in a situation like that.

Smart. Very smart.

Smart girl. Diana's wedding shoes were also low-heeled, although maybe that had something to do with the relative height of her groom . . . ??

A really cool wedding would have everyone in Halloween costumes.

My friend did that in the late 60's. It was pretty cool, actually, and unforgettable.

Anyone who wears heels on their wedding day is insane. No one can see the shoes anyway so they may as well be comfortable.

This is the most sensible thing I've heard about Catherine's shoes. Those they showed last week were a disaster in waiting.

That, I think, was a tongue-in-cheek post. Wasn't there one with lillies of the valley all over it, or something?

I was referring to Catherine having to walk on her toes all day and night....it was the height of the heel, not the glitz.

Don't care about the shoes, I want that red coat.

I dunno how long her wedding dress will be, but telling from most of the royal weddings I've seen, the dress usually covers the shoes. So what's the big deal about her wearing flats? The whole point of heels is that they make your legs like better, but if her legs (and feet) are not even going to be seen, then let her be comfortable and wear flats.

I think the most elegant choice would be a slipper with a short heel - kind've like a silk boudoir slipper. The heel gives a little height and flatters the leg. True flats are not uplifting and make the foot appear larger. Not a good choice for a wedding unless you're marrying Tom Cruise.

The logical thing with this is that nobody will see her feet....she'll have an extremely long day, so be comfortable. I agree about the short heel, though.

Why do women need heels to "flatter" the leg? It's the long legged Barbie syndrome. The heeled/platform shoes currently being promoted are worse for women than Japanese foot-binding.

Stiletto heels are comparable to the old Chinese custom of foot-binding. Why would any woman want to be controlled like that? And it IS control. Wake up, women, and smell the coffee. We are beiing hobbled by Republican men trying to control our bodies ane therefore our lives, and the fashion industry by destroying our feet. We should encourage young women especially to think for themselves, make choices that are in their best interests, and use their brains.

Best description I've ever heard.

I ruined my feet wearing those pointed toed, narrow heeled shoes for 30 years....too bad it's too late to even be comfortable in a 1" heel.

Whatever she chooses to wear, she will look great. She's proven that over the six years that she has been photographed by the press and hounded by the paparazzi,
