Posted: 10/28/11 03:33 PM ET

Halloween is upon us! Folks are flocking to horror movies to see characters laid to waste by paranormal activity and freaky things from outer space, but in real life, the most dangerous creature of all may be on your plate! Watch out for these 11 edibles that can turn from tasty to deadly in a single swallow. Perhaps they should come with a warning, much like the ones that hang on the outside of old haunted houses: Eat at your own risk.

Fugu Blowfish: Anytime your meal options include choosing paralysis vs. death, might we suggest a simple PB&J instead? Fugu contains a potent poison, tetrodotoxin (emphasis on 'toxin'), that can cause either of those two scenarios when the fish is improperly prepared. That's why only licensed chefs are allowed to cook the stuff -- it requires a precise, involved apprenticeship program. If you survive dinner, perhaps an arsenic sundae and a turpentine cocktail would be the perfect nightcap.

I grew up drinking RAW milk. I also milked the cows ... very clean conditions.. no one ever got sick, 9 people in the family . Raw milk is not dangerous. It should be legal & an adult person's choice to purchase it. Homogenized milk will damage your arteries. At the very least stop homogenizing milk.

I've eaten Durian in Malaysia & Singapore and once you get past the smell, it's very tasty. They have a sying that "Durian tastes like Heaven, but smells like hell." You are not allowed to bring durians in any hotels, airline, etc. because of the very bad smell. It takes a good 3 to 4 days for the smell to leave your breath. Once opened it looks and tastes like caramel

Raw milk - REALLY?!! I drink it daily as does my whole family (directly from our goats) and we are extremely healthy. I have been drinking raw milk for years on and off as have my family and not one, not NOT ONE have gotten ill. In addition, my milking practices and handling of the milk are very clean, it just isn't pasturized. If you knew all the nutrients, enzymes (the enzymes that help us digest lactose) and natural vitmain D (thus the reason vitamin D has to be added BACK to the milk) that were taken out of milk through heat treating, you might scratch your head over it. Even the CDC did a study on how many people have gotten sick on raw milk state by state (not dying, but just ill) and in my state ONE, yes, you got it ONE person got ill as a result in TN. Remember, government approved/inspected cantaloupe KILLED 16 people, so raw milk seems pretty darn harmless in comparison. Not to mention, strawberries, spinach, tained meat, etc. - you get the picture. I can't believe that Huffington Post had the audacity to put raw milk in the league with actual foods with toxins in it!!! Next thing you know, they will be telling us McDonalds is good for us - SHEESH!!! Oh wait, the government already has approved that food as fit for human consumption.

If something has the potential to kill you, then it's not food

The ironic thing is that many people are eating foods on a daily basis that are leading to 'lifestyle' diseases down the road (heart disease, diabetes, etc.):
High-fructose corn syrup
Saturated fat
Trans fat
Sucrose
...just to name a few.

Raw milk is regulated. In fact, raw milk dairies can be inspected at any time, without warning. Those dairies that sell pasteurized milk are told when inspections will take place so they have time to clean up if necessary. My husband and I have been drinking raw milk for over 25 years; no problems. Furthermore, what many of you may not know is that the main criteria for evaluating whether or not milk is pasteurized sufficiently is not the absence of bacteria, but the absence of enzymes! I guess it takes more heat to get rid of the enzymes than it does the bacteria because, presumably, when the enzymes are gone the bacteria have gone with it. Those enzymes in raw milk do serve a purpose, however. The main one we are concerned about is that people with lactose intolerance (my husband) can drink the raw milk because of the natural enzyme that "digests" the lactose. This is very much a layman's explanation but, nevertheless, we prefer raw milk. Oh, and the last time raw milk was blamed for an outbreak of disease, it turned out not to be the raw milk -- it was spinach! However, the first thing that was done was to close the raw milk dairies and subject them to inspection -- they all passed and there was no choice but to re-open them!

You are preaching to the converted!!! I have a small herd of dairy goats and my family drinks raw milk EVERY DAY. I milk and handle my milk in a very specific manner as to avoid contamination. I wipe teats with an anti bacterial wipe, squirt out the first two squirts of milk that have been sitting in the teat, rewipe, milk into clean containers, double filter the milk and chill in the freezer immediately for 1 hour. Even when we didn't own them, I purchased raw cow milk from a local farmer. The REASON people are lactose intolerant these days is because of pasturization. Besides, raw milk tastes AWESOME and if I pasturize my goats milk, that is when it gets that "goaty" taste - bleah!!

Here we go with the Raw milk scare mongering. LMAO. People have been drinking raw milk for thousands of years. It isn't that dangerous. Maybe if you are elderly or a sickly child don't drink it. Otherwise it is just to keep competition away from large corporate dairy farms. The FDA is their muscle.

"It isn't that dangerous."

Call me a coward but I prefer to have no danger associated with my milk.
