8 Junk Food Pizzas We Secretly Love

Posted: 07/27/2012 8:35 am

Sure, we love our gourmet, high-quality pizza, but sometimes the kid in us cries out for cheap, lowbrow pizza straight from the freezer. In honor of Pizza Week, we compiled some of our favorite inexpensive supermarket favorites in the slideshow below. Which frozen pies do you sneak when no one's looking? Shout 'em out in the comments.

Red Baron Deep Dish

You don't need to go to Chicago to get a deep-dish pizza when you have Red Baron in your freezer. Does that sound like an advertisement? The amount of joy this guilty pleasure gives will have you singing praises too. The Schwan Food Company, founded by Marvin Schwan in the 1950s when he started delivering ice cream, is behind the Red Baron brand. They started peddling their pizzas in the 1970s, and the company has expanded ever since. They come two in a pack, and, based on the 19 grams of fat and 420 calories a single serving of pepperoni pizza has, it's dangerous not to share. But then again, we aren't eating these to be health-conscious.

I have tried Red B's pizza they are some of the best you can get from the freezer. My kids can never get enough. So we'll try the deep dish on the next pizza night at our house. I will keep you posted. We never count calories on pizza night.

Guilty. I think it's probably from being a latch key kid - and that pizza was always on the menu in school. As a young adult I had a void of knowledge about nutrition until my late 20s. Today (MANY years hence), frozen pizzas are my go-to food when I'm depressed or feel deprived of something.

What I want to know is why the comments for this article are being screened by the moderators.....lol

But I digress, The Freschetta Brick Oven pizza is stop notch when it comes to frozen pizzas.

Totino's Crisp Crust Party Pizza (Cheese) simply are the best. I eat them for dinner, and with just 600 calories I don't hate myself when I finish it. It fits into my weight-loss geared diet perfectly, as I still get to eat pizza (which I cannot live without), and I still have 900 calories left for breakfast, lunch, and raw fruit and veggie snacks throughout the day.

I totally agree with you. If you are lucky (and depending on which part of the country you live in) you can find them for .99.

The Stouffer's French Bread Pizza is also a guilty pleasure. Those triangles of pepperoni on those slabs of crusty bread...priceless.

A lot of them used to be tasty, but they're really going downhill. Half the brands I used to eat, like Red Baron, I can't stand anymore.

Newman's Own has a cheese pizza that's pretty tasty. And the Stouffer's french bread pizzas are still a guilty pleasure.

My favourite frozen is Amy's frozen pizza's. I love their corn meal margarita pizza. Being Jewish I don't eat pork so the only pizza's I eat are veggie, I'm happy with the comparable price and they taste better than other store bought frozen veggie pizza's.

Amy's does pretty good in whatever they come up with. I love how some of their frozen goodies also come in a lower sodium option. Their Veggie Lasagne is a weakness. Mmm.

I can't remember the brand, but there was a frozen pizza I ate every now and then during undergrad. The toppings were bbq chicken pieces, red pepper strips, mozzarella cheese, and black olives. I bought them on sale and cut them up so they could fit in my little micro-fridge. Add a small salad as a side, a glass of lemonade, and those were some good eats.

Good times, good times...

If you buy a pizza where the peperoni is cut into little cubes (TOTINOS) you should automatically know it is garbage. They sell those things for a buck I think.

me too! Was just gonna post it and saw yours first. The plain cheese one is awesome but happened to try the one with pepperoni and now will never go back to just the cheese one :-)

I agree with you! Both are excellent! Sometimes when I don't want the spice I go for the cheese with olive oil and sea salt!

Pizza is not junk food. If you can get a good pizza, you get your meat, your veggies, your dairy, and your cereal. Good for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. However, with the exception of Digiorno, that stuff was garbage. Digiorno is the best store-bought pizza I ever ate. I lived in Chicago for a year, and those people know their pizza. Deep-dish spinach pizza so good, you don't even miss the meat!
