Attorney General Merrick Garland has appointed a special counsel to lead Donald Trump-related investigations into cases like classified documents at Mar-A-Lago and the Capitol insurrection.
The move was announced just three days after Trump announced his 2024 candidacy for president.
The investigation was prompted by Rollins' appearance at a political fundraiser featuring first lady Jill Biden.
The official change comes amid reports last year that Donald Trump’s Department of Justice secretly worked to obtain journalists’ information.
Laurence Tribe warned that the former president is facing an attorney general who will "leave no stone unturned."
"Tell me when it happened before," Franken asked Alice Stewart after she made a claim about filling Supreme Court vacancies in election years.
The restrictions are meant to ensure the department's independence from politics.
When asked later for an explanation about the comment, Paladino said he was "just being facetious."
"The Department of Justice, when it comes to law enforcement, is independent," White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said. "This is what we believe."
Law enforcement has been concerned about classified material at Mar-a-Lago that Trump took with him when he left office.
