Writer Blagojevich Wanted Fired 'Stunned' By Recordings

For Chicago Tribune editorial writer John McCormick, Tuesday was surreal: after decades of covering the news, including 18 years at Newsweek, he was the news.

The criminal charges against Gov. Blagojevich include allegations that he threatened to withhold state support for the sale of Wrigley Field unless its owner, Tribune Co., fired certain Chicago Tribune editorial board members -- chiefly McCormick -- who criticized the governor's administration.

McCormick said he was stunned over the news. "We've never had an unpleasant relationship,'' McCormick said of his face-to-face meetings with Blagojevich. "Whenever he came in he was gracious.''
