[S]everal Illinois political operatives said there is an ongoing discussion about how to dissuade Burris from running in 2010. They are eager to avoid any insinuation that they are pushing out the Senate's lone African-American member, a move that would provoke a backlash similar to the one Senate leaders suffered when they initially denied Burris his Senate appointment in January.
One Democratic operative in the state said "there is talk" among Illinois Democrats of pushing the White House to broker a deal to appoint Burris to a position that would take him out of the Senate and help clear the field in 2010.
"It creates an enormous problem for Democrats looking to run," said the operative, who, as did others for this article, requested anonymity to discuss the situation candidly.
