Sanford Bike Accident Leaves Wrists Sprained

AP GREENVILLE, S.C. -- South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford has had his hands full with an Ethics Commission investigation of his aircraft use, as well as his revelation of a yearlong affair with a woman in Argentina.

Now his hands are really hurting.

The Greenville News reported that Sanford said Wednesday he sprained both wrists in a bike accident Saturday with his youngest son.

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford has accused some of slinging mud since he revealed a yearlong affair with a woman in Argentina, but now the two-term Republican is voluntarily wading into some mud of his own.

His office says Sanford is participating in the Marine Corps' Ultimate Challenge Mud Run on Saturday at Fort Jackson.

The event covers a 4.2-mile course of dirt roads, trails, mud holes, walls, trenches and logs. Sanford says the run is part of his ongoing "Family Fitness Challenge," which emphasizes health living for South Carolinians.

Gov. Mark Sanford would not say Wednesday whether he is in communication with Maria Belen Chapur, his Argentine lover whom he secretly visited in June.

"I'm moving ahead," Sanford said when asked by The State if he and Chapur are still in contact.

Sanford said he was not being coy by not giving a yes or no answer but thought it best to concentrate on his legislative agenda instead of rumors.

Sanford says his son suddenly turned left and Sanford was locked in his pedals and went down. He says he was lucky he didn't break his wrists.

Sanford says he went ahead with a 4-mile Mud Run obstacle course race with another son Saturday afternoon, which didn't help. He says X-rays Sunday showed a tiny hairline fracture.
