Luther North High, Barring A Miracle, Will Close Permanently On June 5

Luther North High School Principal Tom Wiemann couldn't get the words out at a student assembly Tuesday. Tears ended his attempt.

A staff member had to finish telling his 210 students that barring a miracle, the 100-year-old school will be closing forever on June 5.

Like sister school Luther South on the South Side last year, Luther North -- the second-oldest community Lutheran high school in the world -- has fallen victim to declining enrollment and tuition vs. overwhelming debt to its lender, the Lutheran Church Extension Fund.
