Pulitzer Prize winning author Jack Rakove was on 'The Daily Show' last night to talk about his new book, "Revolutionaries," and the remarkable story of our founding fathers. He examines the lives of Washington, Jefferson, Madison, and others not as though they were deities, but as real people. "To bring them alive, you have to think about them as real political actors," he said.
One of the most fascinating parts of the story is Rakove's detailing of the revelation that came to these men that they really were revolutionaries. They did have a sense that they would be important to United States history, Rakove said -- they kept all of their letters extremely zealously -- but they couldn't have known how important they would become to us today.
