BP Donates $1 Million To Help Fishermen Affected By Gulf Oil Spill

In response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill that has gushed millions of gallons of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico, BP, the oil company responsible for the sunken oil rig, has donated $1 million to help families affected by the disaster.

Businessweek reports the donation was given to Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New Orleans and the Second Harvest Food Bank, providing food aid and financial assistance to fishermen forced out of work due to the oil spill.

Alan Allgood, Chief Operations Officer of Second Harvest, explained,

"BP America's donation will help ensure that Second Harvest can meet the increased need of the affected fishermen and their families during these uncertain times in addition to the existing need for food assistance across south Louisiana."

According to WDSU, Catholic Charities has helped 4,600 people at four crisis centers in Louisiana. In addition to offering food and financial help, each center also offers crisis counseling to help families through these difficult times.
