Avoiding 'Summer Brain Drain' (VIDEO)

School's out for summer! While the whole family is enjoying beach days, family vacations and afternoons by the pool, it's good to keep in mind a few ways to make sure your kids don't fall victim to what experts call "summer brain drain."

"There's been a lot of study done that shows that about 40 percent of math skills and 30 percent of language arts skills can go out the window over the summer," said Time to Play Magazine parenting experts Shannon Eis on CBS.

She offers several fun and easy tips to keep your children's minds active throughout the summer without giving up that carefree vacation feel:

  • Have your kids help cook dinner or dessert. Measuring ingredients is an easy way to practice math skills.
  • Read a book together or start a book club. Choose engaging, rather than overly challenging, books for summer.
  • Get your kids involved in the family vacation trip by taking photos and creating a scrapbook.
