The Top 10 Trends On Twitter In 2010

Twitter recently unleashed a list of 2010's top trends, which reflect the topics that dominated the 25 billion tweets sent this year.

Twitter defines "trends" thus:

Twitter Trends are automatically generated by an algorithm that attempts to identify topics that are being talked about more right now than they were previously. The Trends list is designed to help people discover the 'most breaking' breaking news from across the world, in real-time. The Trends list captures the hottest emerging topics, not just what's most popular.

Frequent tweeters may be surprised to see Justin Bieber in the lowly #8 spot on the list of top trends, which also include topics from news events, people, movies, TV, tech, sports and more. Each of the top 10 trends are an umbrella term for multiple related terms used frequently in tweets. Together, the list of trends presents a cross-section of the conversations on Twitter throughout 2010.
