Kicking off a series of spectacular arts events in Los Angeles, Photo LA opens this weekend in celebration of its 20th anniversary. Each year this event draws crowds of more than 10,000 people who run the gamut from arts aficionados and photography buffs to newbies and the curious. This year, the fair runs January 14-17 at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium and features an exhibitor list that reads like any major art fair around the world, including Barry Singer Gallery, Women in Photography, Villa del Arte Galleries, and International Young Projects. The exhibition is far from static, featuring still photographs and multimedia installations that truly showcase the breadth of photography and its creative scope. For the inquisitive, there are workshops and lectures on subject matters like collecting art and independent printing and publishing, not to mention book signings with Ann Arbus and various performances.
