This American Life Presents Stories About Prom

It's That Time Of Year

The prom.

For some teens, it's the pinnacle of their high school careers. For others, it's a rite of passage full of "firsts" and, sometimes, "lasts". And for still others, it's merely another party to chronicle the most awkward years of their lives.

This episode features four stories from high schools around the country. It answers questions such as: What happens when prom season coincides with tornado season? How important is prom in young adult fiction? Where do teens go after prom? And is there anything that could possibly make the whole ordeal more intense? (Hint: the answer to the last question is a very firm 'yes.')

Throughout the program, reporters ask high school students to describe what they're doing and what they're feeling, providing insightful commentary about the lives of contemporary American teens -- and it may be surprising how little has truly changed from generation to generation.

So grab your corsage and spike a nearby punchbowl; it's time to get nostalgic.
