Sergent Phillip Newton Cited With DUI

Another Denver Police Officer Arrested

Denver police have arrested an officer suspected of driving under the influence, and who also refused to take a breathalyzer or blood test.

Sergeant Phillip Newton, 49, was arrested and briefly hospitalized Monday night after being involved in a minor accident. Police records show that Newton has been a Denver police officer since 1987 and is assigned to the department's Property Bureau.

Newton, who was reportedly off-duty at the time of arrest, is also facing charges of prohibited use of a weapon.

CBS4 reports that Newton was also arrested by Aurora police on August 27, 2004 on DUI and careless driving charges. The charges however, were later dropped.

The case has gone directly to the District Attorney's office, a Denver Police Spokesperson declined to comment further.
