Bronx Water Main Bursts: Two Subway Stations Closed, Concerns Over Gas Line (VIDEO)

WATCH: Bronx Water Main Bursts

A large water main broke in the Mount Hope section of the Bronx a little before 6:30 this morning, ABC News reports, turning 5 blocks of Jerome Avenue near E 177th Street into a river.

According to CBS News, the water is submerging cars and causing roads to buckle. Two subway stations have been forced to close and a nearby shelter has been evacuated.

But perhaps most concerning is a gas line under the water.

A fire chief told PIX11 News that a gas line underneath the water main break is also a point of concern. He said the gas line has not been shut down but the weight of the water may compromise the integrity of the gas line.

According to CBS, No. 4 trains are bypassing the 176th Street station. Service to the Bx1, Bx2, Bx3, Bx18, Bx36, Bx40 and M4 are also delayed.

It is not yet known what caused the water main to break, WPIX reports.
