United Adopts iPads, Embraces Paperless Cockpits

iPads Help United Create Paperless Cockpits

As popular as the iPad has become with travelers, it seems it may be more popular with airlines.

United Airlines has announced that it will be giving pilots iPads as part of an initiative to create paperless cockpits.

In a public statement, the airline claimed that each iPad would replace roughly 38 pounds of operating manuals and charts and that, by making planes lighter, the iPads would help save 326,000 gallons of jet fuel along with 12,000 sheets of paper per pilot.

Similar programs are underway at Delta and Alaska Airlines and the flight attendants on British Airways have been given iPads to help them provide customized care to frequent fliers.
