The Dalai Lama led prayers in solidarity with Buddhist monks who self-immolated in protest of Chinese rule over Buddhist practices in Tibet. Monks gathered in the capital of Taiwan for similar prayers, while thousands of devotees joined together to pray and march in New Delhi.
Nine Buddhists -- including monks, former monks and a nun -- have burned themselves in the last year, and at least five of them have died.
The Chinese government called the acts of self-immolation "terrorism in disguise."
