Penn State: The Aftermath

Penn State will never be the same.

Last night, the school's students took to the streets to show their displeasure over the firing of Joe Paterno, the university's legendary football coach. They chanted their support for JoePa, broke windows and turned over a TV news van. Paterno was fired as furor mounted over his inaction after he was informed by an eye witness that Sandusky had sodomized a child in the university's locker room. Paterno informed school authorities, but made no move to call the police himself.

Despite student support, Paterno's reputation is definitively in tatters. In addition to yesterday's firing, Paterno's nomination for the Presidential Medal of Freedom has been rescinded by two senators.

The scandal itself has only grown more horrendous. Today, new allegations surfaced against Sandusky and the university accusing Sandusky of "pimping" children to donors. Sandusky's alleged victims have doubled since the case became public knowledge.

On Wednesday, Sandusky was painted out of a mural in downtown State College. The artist, Michael Piloto, has been working on the mural since 2001, which depicts inspiring people in the community.

The Patriot News has more:

When the mother of one of Sandusky's alleged victims emailed him Wednesday morning, asking him to remove Sandusky from the mural, Pilato knew he had to do it.

"I believe in due process. I do. (But) with all the evidence in the news right now and some of the (alleged) victims living here, it kills me to think of the victims having to walk past this," he said. "It saddens me to do this. When I first met Jerry, I thought he was a great man. He fooled me like he fooled everyone."

He is painting Sandusky out of the mural and painting in an empty chair with a blue ribbon to represent the victims. "I think we need to remember that pedophilia is a sickness and something we have to address as a society," Pilato said.
