Gabriel Zakuani, Soccer Star, Names Son 'Trendy'

Apple. Blanket. Peaches. Satchel. At this point, naming your kids a noun is old hat. Even proper nouns have found their place. Hello, Ireland Baldwin. So in an effort to stay eternally ahead of the curve, soccer star Gabriel Zakuani gave his child the one name that says it all: Trendy.

The 25-year-old Peterborough United defender has been the subject of much discussion in the sports world and the parent blogosphere for his unusual choice of name. So what made him and his wife to choose Trendy? (Reportedly, Trendy Zakuani is the first Trendy the world has seen.) According to Zakuani, the inspiration was two-fold: social media and fashion.

"People have asked if his name is because of 'trending topics' on Twitter. Maybe it was in the back of my mind," Zakuani told The Sun. "The official reason was she [his wife Shanice] wanted something to reflect [her job in fashion]. But it was me who came up with Trendy."

We think this name seems a little bit meta on all levels -- after all, how can you get more on-trend than with the name itself? Although Trendy isn't trending worldwide on Twitter right now and Gawker has issued a plea to Gabriel and Shanice to refrain from naming their second child Hashtag, the Zakuani family has certainly figured out how to make a social media-fueled splash.
