Iraq Veterans Against the War, is taking a break from talking about withdrawing troops to highlight the needs of current and former women service members this Veterans Day.
The organization was motivated in part by the service's surgeon general, Lt. Gen. Eric Schoomaker, who recently stated that 90,000 soldiers are medically unfit for combat, Armytimes.com reports. The IVAW believes that figure is far under-exaggerated, especially with regard to female veterans. "Moreover they are subjected to scrutiny above and beyond their male counterparts; yet still they thrive, overcoming these obstacles to become powerful leaders in the movement for service members' rights."
"Women service members are disproportionately abused and neglected by their command and disproportionately affected by military traumas, sexual assualt, harrassment, and sexism," the IVAW stated on its blog on Tuesday.
To raise awareness for women veterans, the organization has put together events across the country.
