Since its founding in 1970, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) has been praised for its victories in conservation and environmentalism. On Monday, November 14, NRDC will honor Wendy Schmidt, Eric Schmidt and Arianna Huffington for their work using technology and media to spotlight important issues, including environmental crises and solutions.
Arianna said, "The NRDC's vital work has now a new urgency. So I'm very grateful for this honor -- both because I share a long history with NRDC and because this is really a recognition of the priority The Huffington Post has placed on covering both environmental crises and innovative solutions around the world, as well as igniting citizen engagement around an issue that unites us all."
Many NRDC members blog for The Huffington Post, including Rocky Kistner, who continues to cover the devastating effects of the BP oil spill on the Gulf, and Jake Schmidt, who reports on the most pressing climate change issues confronting the world today.
In recognition of NRDC's accomplishments over the past 41 years, we take a look back at some of its most noteworthy moments.
One of NRDC's important victories was focused on protecting grey whale breeding grounds near Baja California in 2000. Celebrating the 10-year anniversary of this accomplishment, NRDC captured some amazing pictures of the whales at Laguna San Ignacio.
More recently, NRDC released a report this summer on the projected impact of climate change related to water in U.S. cities. It found that droughts, floods, rising seas and decreased water quality are all possible in the coming century.
NRDC has also taken on the digital world. In October, it partnered with Facebook and a clean energy startup to introduce a "social networking-based energy application that will help consumers monitor, improve and compare their home's energy usage with their friends and other Facebook users."
