Mitt Romney Chooses Kid Rock's 'Born Free' As Campaign Theme Song

GOP Candidate Picks Kid Rock Song For Campaign Theme

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has chosen Kid Rock's "Born Free" as his campaign theme song. A Romney spokesman confirmed the decision to the Detroit News.

Kid Rock has been a vocal supporter of former President George W. Bush and has performed at Republican fundraisers. After Barack Obama was elected president, he said he would support him "until I have a reason not to." He added of Obama's win, "It's good the U.S. has proved it's not as racist as it's sometimes portrayed."

Kid Rock, whose real name is Robert Ritchie, grew up in Michigan, like Romney did.

"Born Free" is also the title of Kid Rock's eighth studio album released in 2010. The song peaked at number 31 on the Billboard Rock Songs chart.

Former Republican presidential candidate Tim Pawlenty, who endorsed Romney, has also taken the stage to "Born Free."

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) received a cease-and-desist letter from Tom Petty for using his song "American Girl" at her campaign announcement last June.

UPDATE: Kid Rock said Romney did not need his permission to use "Born Free" in a post on his website. "He and anyone else who wants to use my song do not need my permission. I said he could use it and I would say the same for any other candidate. I have to have a little faith that every candidate feels like he or she can help this country," he wrote.
