'The Secret Circle': Britt Robertson Previews Cassie's Dark Magic, Jake's Return And 'Witness' Episode

'Secret Circle' Star Dishes On Tonight's Episode

Actress Britt Robertson's character, Cassie Blake, just can't catch a break on the CW's supernatural hit "The Secret Circle."

First, she finds out that her father's lineage comes from dark Balcoin magic. Then, Diana's grandmother tries to kill her. Then, Cassie almost kills Adam (Thomas Dekker). Then, Faye (Phoebe Tonkin) tries to steal some of her black magic. And now, she has to deal with the return of Jake Armstrong (Chris Zylka) to Chance Harbor.

Jake and Cassie get pretty close in this week's episode, titled "Witness." He offers Cassie a chance to finally find out what happened the night her father died in a mysterious boat fire 16 years ago. Meanwhile, Diana (Shelley Hennig) and Adam are suspicious of Jake's motives and still don't trust him.

HuffPost TV chatted with Robertson about Cassie's fight to subdue her dark magic, her growing attraction to bad boy Jake and what to expect in Thursday night's episode. But don't give up hope, Cassie-Adam fans! Their love is written in the stars.

We know that this is the episode where we finally get some answers regarding the deadly fire that happened 16 years ago. What else can you tell us?
It's unlike any other episode that we've done so far, in the sense that we're kind of revealing what happened 16 years ago. It's been such a huge mystery between the circle, trying to figure out what actually happened and what that means for our existing circle. A lot of questions will definitely be answered. The truth behind John Blackwell will be revealed. And it's really exciting because Jake and Cassie find out all of these mysteries and reveal it to the circle, but they do it in a really interesting, magical way.

Cassie and Jake left things off in a weird place. Does Cassie really trust him?
Well, that's a big part of the episode. She'll definitely be dealing with her feelings toward him. She feels betrayed by him. He left with the witch hunters, and she doesn't really know what his ulterior motives are and why he's back. That's definitely something that lingers in the air between them. It will put a damper on things, but more than anything, the reason why she was hoping that Jake would come back was not only because of her emotional connection to him, but also because he has so many answers that nobody else has. He knows about this darker magic, and he was there when the fire happened. He has more information about her father, too, so I think that she'll be more serious than vengeful as far as her relationship with him.

Is Cassie going to use more of her dark magic? I mean, last time that happened, she almost killed Adam.
I think now that she knows that it's something that's inside of her, it will be something that she uses as a defense mechanism. She'll use it whenever she needs it. But there's a bit of dark magic in this upcoming episode. We're been trying out a little dark magic whenever we can, without overwhelming the audience, of course.

So you ultimately see Cassie's dark magic as a defense mechanism and not as a hindrance?
I definitely think that's the idea. The problem is that, without Jake being here, she doesn't know her limit. She doesn't know what that dark power is and how she can home into it. How does she work it? How does she use it? I think that it will be a big part of what they explore in this upcoming episode.

That must be exciting for you as an actress to play a character on the cusp of good and evil.
It's always a challenge when you have to play a bit of Jekyll and Hyde. But it's so much fun, and it's exactly what you want to be doing on television. You don't want to be doing the same thing week after week. It's cool to mix it up and have a little good, a little bad, a little evil and even a little ugly. It's so refreshing being able to play all of those key elements in this character.

Now, we've talked about Cassie's relationship with Jake, but what about Adam? In the first few episodes, we found out that Cassie and Adam are destined to be together, so how do you see that playing out?
Cassie and Adam reconnected during last week's episode. It was like they fell for each other all over again. Now that him and Diana are no longer together, I think that Adam and Cassie can really explore their true feelings for each other, beyond the whole "written in the stars" prophecy. It will be a good time for them to really figure out how they feel and how they'll work together to figure out what all of that stuff means. You'll definitely get a bigger taste of that relationship in the upcoming episodes.

Will Cassie feel like she's betraying Diana?
I think her loyalty has been a big obstacle for Cassie and Adam. She wants to be a good friend for Diana because she was the one person that accepted her into the circle. She's been so kind and generous toward her, and Cassie really needs that friendship. She needs someone to rely on. But I think that since Adam and Diana have decided to go their separate ways, Cassie can figure out what's going on in her heart without betraying Diana.

So now here's the tough question: Team Adam or Team Jake?
That's so hard! I always say that I love to believe in love at first sight and fate and destiny ... all of that. I think that it's a very sweet thing to believe in. Who doesn't want that? So I love the idea of Cassie and Adam together because they're meant to be together. But I also like Cassie and Jake. He brings out a different side of her, and that's really great to play. So as an actor, it's fun to have the Jake-Cassie-Adam triangle.

Well, it's not like you can go wrong.
True. It's not looks that either of them are lacking. I'm a lucky girl.

I love the relationship between Faye and Cassie. There's obviously something brewing there, and I can't wait for the epic showdown between them.
I hope so! I love their relationship, too. It's so fun and feisty, and it's also just so real to who 16-year-olds are and what happens in high school. So we'll see. They can also be really cool allies from time to time. It depends on where the writers want them to go, but I think it would be cool to see them working together.

What about Dawn [Natasha Henstridge] and Charles [Gale Harold]? What kind of tricks do they have up their sleeves for Cassie?

They always have something up their sleeves! I'm hoping for more scenes with them. Hopefully, that will happen in the upcoming episodes when the writers bring their story lines together. I think they're going to have their hands full with Ethan (Adam Harrington) right now, so it might be awhile until they can really get to Cassie.

"The Secret Circle" airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. EST on The CW.
