Joan And Melissa Rivers Talk Merkins At 'Joan & Melissa: Joan Knows Best?' Screening

Joan & Melissa Rivers: 'Merkins Are So Last Year'

As red carpet veterans and fashion commentators, Joan and Melissa Rivers know what's hot and what's not. And according to the mother-daughter duo, the merkin is just so last season.

After a screening of WEtv's "Joan & Melissa: Joan Knows Best?" in New York City on Thursday, HuffPost asked the arbiters of celebrity style what they thought of the recent controversy over the fox fur merkin line started by former "Real Housewives Of New York" star Cindy Barshop. Is it wrong to have a pubic wig made of animal fur? Are pubic wigs even in style?

"[Merkins] are very last year. We had merkins. We're over merkins! We're done with merkins on our year-end special," Melissa said authoritatively.

As for Joan, she's also done with merkins, though her history with the accessory goes far beyond a calendar year. "My darling, I must have washed lepers' feet," she said. "I must have made merkins for lepers in a previous life!"

Leper-related or not, merkins are not a toupee for today, which should come as a relief to PETA. "It's downright cruel to kill an animal to decorate your privates," the animal rights organization's president Ingrid Newkirk said of the fox fur trend.

Sorry, Cindy. Joan and Melissa really do know best.
