Step into the Los Angeles home of Rooney rock band drummer Ned Brower and actress Sarah Jane Morris and you might be surprised that many of the decor decisions were made with the environment in mind.
Overall, the home reflects a certain California casualness, with the midcentury modern-style pieces and color palettes you'd expect from a Los Angeles home. But much of the furnishings were actually sourced from Craigslist or were refurbished vintage pieces. The decision not to buy completely new everything is a subtle, affordable way to go green. VOC-free paint, like the earth-toned nursery hue by the company Mystic Paint, adds color without fumes or off-gassing.
In the back of their home, Ned built a meticulous organic garden. Planted with organic greens, swiss chard, corn, beans and zucchini, he also incorporated portable self-growing vegetable gardens from a company called Home Grow Micro Farms, which are compact and can be moved around easily in a home that's short on space.
Ned and Sarah Jane's home proves that "green decisions" don't have to be difficult to live with or necessarily expensive. But perhaps what we love most about the house is that it feels like a happy, comfortable and lived-in space.
