'HIMYM': Ted's Surprise For Marshall And Lily

After his attempt to rekindle something with Robin failed, Ted went to another extreme on "How I Met Your Mother" (Mon., 8 p.m. EST on CBS), only this one was completely unexpected. And it came at just the right time, considering what was going on with Marshall and Lily. Perhaps it was the unexpected arrival of Robin into their suburban life that got them reflecting upon what their future lives were starting to look like.

Robin thought it horrific, but they seemed to be fully embracing the more relaxed and inane pursuits of their suburban compatriots. But as it turned out, they were only trying to convince themselves this was a life they could enjoy because they felt so certain it was the best environment to raise a child. But what's wrong with all those kids who grow up in the city?

Robin helped them realize there was nothing wrong with it, and it was just in time. Throughout the episode, Ted was trying to fill the hole that was Robin's bedroom in the apartment he used to share with Marshall and Lily. By episode's end, he realized that the bedroom wasn't the problem. He was the problem.

So he invited them to the city, where they arrived to find the apartment empty save for a shoddily constructed crib in Robin's old room. The apartment was theirs again, with Robin's bedroom the new nursery. What's left up in the air is where Ted took all of his stuff, and where he's going to live. For that matter, where's Robin going to live?
