How To Wear Mules And Not Look Like Your Grandmother: Lessons For A Modern Day Lady (PHOTOS)

How To Wear Mules And Not Look Like Your Grandmother

There's no denying a woman's love for shoes, especially those that are sky-high, often with a platform and that come with a bright red sole. This season however, there's a return to the classics, with modesty holding court as the mule makes its way back onto the feet of the truly chic. And though these are certainly a classic, the latest versions are young, fresh and modern. For Spring 2012, designers like Louis Vuitton, Dolce & Gabbana and Prada showed colorful slides with mid-height heels, reminiscent of old Hollywood and its stars' sexy glamour. Done in bright colors and metallics by Manolo Blahnik and embellished by Jimmy Choo, the mule has been updated to include contemporary touches that are both easy and fun to wear. Here are a couple of key lessons when slipping on this shoe for spring:

1. A sleek slip-on heel works well with a pleated or pencil skirt that falls below the knee. It's perfectly proportioned and makes for an on-trend retro look.

2. When wearing a mule with jeans, try on a pair with a bit of platform, especially when the denim is a wide-leg cut.

3. Mules should never be worn with a short, body-con dress. With a curve-enhancing ensemble like that, go back to the 5-inch pair.

However you decide to wear a classic mule this spring, these are definitely the most darling and demure heels that you can invest in now.
