A construction worker was killed and two others were injured during a building collapse in Morningside Heights Thursday morning, ABC reports.

The accident occurred just before 8AM at Broadway and West 130th Street, during a demolition scheduled as part of a major expansion for Columbia University.

Three workers were trapped in the rubble when emergency workers arrived at the scene. Police tell NBC New York two of the workers were transported to St. Luke's Hospital. One of the transported workers later succumbed to his injuries and died. The third worker was treated at the scene.

It's not yet clear what caused the collapse.

The Associated Press notes New York's recent history with construction accidents: "In 2008, two construction crane collapses in the city killed a total of seven people within two months. In one collapse, a crane rigger was acquitted of manslaughter and all other charges. In the other, a manslaughter trial for the crane's owner began last month."
