Julianna Margulies: 'The Good Wife' Is Staging A Sexual Revolution

'The Good Wife's' Sexual Revolution

Julianna Margulies has won an Emmy for her heartbreaking work as Alicia Florrick, the spurned lawyer wife of a politician, on CBS' "The Good Wife." But there is one scene that she probably won't ever live down. No, it's not a dramatic speech to a judge or an emotional confrontation with her estranged husband, it's a sex scene.

In the Season 2 premiere, Margulies filmed a scene with her TV husband Chris Noth where his character, Peter, performs oral sex on Alicia.

"The first thing that went through my mind is, 'Oh dear God, how are we going to film this?' Then, 'Oh God, my father's going to watch the show,'" Margulies told More magazine about the now infamous scene. "But I love it."

The scene didn't come without controversy. Prior to the Season 2 premiere in 2010, "The Good Wife" co-creator Robert King, one part of the husband and wife team behind the series, said the show had to deal with network standards.

"One thing we've bumped up against [the network] on is how we depict oral sex, which we did in our first episode," King said at a press conference. "How much can we show and how much can't we show? Obviously, we're not cable, so it's limited."

Margulies told More that Alicia's voice comes directly from co-creator Michelle King.

"Michelle King is so prim and proper to look at, and she's one of the raunchiest -- the strong Alicia voice, that's Michelle saying, 'Enough of this bullshit. Alicia needs to have oral sex performed on her.'"

During Season 3 of "The Good Wife," Margulies' character had an affair with her boss after years of sexual tension.

"I truly believe she's instigating a sexual revolt for network television," Margulies said. "I think it's brave, and I love to try things people haven't tried before."
