Whoopi Goldberg criticized the many voices who have weighed in on Trayvon Martin for distracting from his death on Monday's "The View."
Martin was unarmed when he was shot dead by a neighborhood watch volunteer named George Zimmerman. His killing and the local police department's failure to arrest his shooter have sparked outrage across the country.
On Monday, Goldberg noted that much of the controversy had unfolded while "The View" was on hiatus, and spoke out about Martin's death. She expressed her dismay at some of the reactions to the tragedy.
"What's bothering me more than anything else is that — I know that it's important to do all the marches and everything, but I don't wanna lose sight of the fact that a 17 year old boy who had Skittles and some iced tea was shot dead by a man, by a vigilante," she said.
Walters said that nobody had "lost sight" of that, but Goldberg disagreed. She took issue with various groups for focusing attention on their own plans to seek justice. "It's all about the soundbite," she lamented. She noted that some people have even spread a wrong address as George Zimmerman's.
"I just think that you know, everybody needs to take a step back and remember what this is about," she said. "I want people to stop before they make bad decisions that compound an issue and take it away from the fact that a 17 year old boy was shot by a vigilante."
