Afghanistan War: Breakdown Of Fighters In The Country

Who Is Fighting In Afghanistan?

As Afghanistan and the United States discuss conditions for a strategic partnership, HuffPost World looks at the different troops and fighters in the country.

The Associated Press reports that 68,000 American troops are expected to remain in Afghanistan at the end of September 2012. An estimated 40,000 non-American troops are in the country as part of NATO's ISAF force.

352,000 Afghan soldiers and policemen will be responsible for protecting the country after 2014, when most of the American forces are scheduled to return home.

The Haqqani network, a regional terror organization operating primarily along the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan, is believed to number close to 10,000 fighters. Afghan officials believe the network, led by Jalaluddin Haqqani and his son Sirajuddin, was behind coordinated attacks in several Afghan cities last Sunday.
