Chuck Brown, 'Godfather Of Go Go,' Has Pneumonia

D.C. Music Legend's Mystery Illness Revealed

WASHINGTON -- Legendary musician Chuck Brown, D.C.'s "Godfather of Go Go,” has been hospitalized since mid-April, when he canceled a show at the newly reopened Howard Theater. No one was quite sure why.

"He has pneumonia," [KK Brown] said in a brief interview, adding that he’s been hospitalized for two months. "He is in the hospital, he is recovering and people need to just keep praying for him."

KK Brown, who performs in her father's band, declined to provide additional details. But according to sources close to the family, Chuck Brown was admitted to a hospital complaining of arthritis, and doctors discovered and removed a blood clot in an unspecified area of his body. As he recovered from the operation, the sources said, Brown contracted pneumonia, which continues to keep him on the sidelines of the music scene he helped transform.

Rumors swilled on Twitter last week that Brown had died, causing Brown's daughter Cherita Whiting to say she wished "people would put themselves in our shoes. . . With social media, stuff spreads so fast and it's not right.”

Fans have taken to Twitter with an outpouring of support for Brown and his family:

WTTG-TV/FOX 5 reports that Brown has canceled his scheduled May performances.
